Semporna was not the little sea side town we expected but we had high hopes for what was under water so we checked into a floating hotel in the town. The next day we took a speed boat out to a beautiful deserted island to do some snorkelling....it did not let us down. It was beautiful with white sands as far as you could see and water so blue it looked like it was out of a film, there were only a few people who lived on the island...the younger ones would climb up and fetch you a coconut for a few coins! The island was nicknamed 'sunburn island' ...the question wasn't whether or not you got sunburnt, it was a question of how bad...in Shelly's case VERY BAD, the similarity to the lobster tone was uncanny!
We snorkelled in the clear waters all morning and saw millions of fish in every colour you could imagine...Shell spotted something she could only describe as a sword fish without the spikes! There were star fish that looked like they were covered in chocolate drops and ones that were as blue as the sea! Rich's beady eye also paid off when he managed to spot a turtle bobbing around followed by a puffer fish floating aimlessly....not to mention the sea snakes that slithered by! We managed to purchase a retro under water disposable camera and so attempted to capture as many of the weird and wonderful underwater creatures as possible.....even if we didn't managed that we sure got some beautiful ones of us in full snorkel gear so well worth the purchase either way! In the afternoon after lunch on the boat we followed the trainee divers out to sea and even when the boat was anchored out at sea the temperature still measured 34 Degrees...it was like swimming in a giant bath tub!!!After a wicked day at sea we decided that the islands were too beautiful not to stay on so we booked a night stay on Mabul, one of the islands just off the coast.
The next morning we awoke both feeling a bit sore from our day at sunburn island...shell a bit worse than rich! After seeing our little beach hut on Mabul, the boat trip seemed worthwhile. It was so nice just to relax by our hut and on the beach in the blistering heat...couldn't believe it was still November! The next day we discovered that this islands snorkelling did not disappoint with many underwater creatures to entertain us!
We grabbed the afternoon boat back to mainland and boarded an overnight bus to Kinabalu National Park.
