Kota Kinabalu was nothing like a capital, more like a small town but with markets and food stalls galore it had an excellent atmosphere. We jumped on a mini bus which we assumed would take us to the centre of KK but after blaring out RnB music through the streets for 20 minutes we seemed to end up pretty much where we started, so after one more bus ride we made it to the city centre and headed out to follow our noses to the food market. This place was amazing....rows upon rows of stalls selling local delicacies including the largest fish BBQ, chicken ass, ABC (a local sweet drink, mix between a fruit salad and a milk shake...YUM!) and homemade doughnuts! After indulging ourselves with as much food as we could fit in we headed back for a few games of cards and some dodgy orange vodka before bed.
We decided to attempt a picnic in the park so headed to the supermarket to stock up on food before we headed off to the other side of town....after a long walk in the blistering heat we soon discovered that the park was actually a small patch of grass on the busiest junction in the whole bloody city- the map was very deceiving! We then decided to relocate to a famous clock tower that survived the war!...unfortunately this was located right of the highway into the city so we sat and admired the streams of traffic while we had of picnic lol! That night we discovered a arts and craft market that was only partially open as it was getting late, as we wondered down the half open isles of stalls we began to hear some scurrying and squeaking...Rich then got a nice treat as a rat scurried out just in front of his foot! Once one came out that seemed to be the green light for the rest of them and they appeared from under every stall and box in the place.....needless to say we made a pretty swift exit after that!
To get a day out of the city we took a speed boat trip to one of the islands that lay off the coast of KK...It was home to sooo many monitor lizards that were not afraid to make themselves known! We spent the day exploring and on the beach soaking up some rays with Shell finishing another book for a change! Unfortunately no pictures as we managed to pack the camera but no memory card!
The next morning we set off bright and early to catch our plane to Kuala Lumpur.
