We landed in Santiago 4 hours ealier than we had left NZ on the same day so the first day was spent in a bit of blur of wandering around the city and catching up on sleep we had lost somewhere along the way! After some reservations we set out the next morning on a free walking tour of the city, It actually turned out to be pretty good and we spent 4 hours learning about Chile and the best things to get up to while we were there! The city was really cool, all the comforts of a western city with the quirky extras and bright colours of south america, good mix! After the tour had finished us and a few guys we'd met in the group headed up the highest hill in Santiago to have a look a the city from above...Once again Rich was stuck on an old rikerty tram up the steepest track we've ever seen, sweaty palms and fake smiles for him! Once we reached the top the view was well worth it and we sat in the shade provided by the giant virgin mary on top of the hill and watched the city in the sun! Once down we wandered our way back through the colourful bussling streets of the city and bought even more souvenirs (We had bought another bag for gifts and it seemed to only be encouraging us to buy more to fill it!) That night we took advantage of the chilean BBQ put on offer by the hostel, hmmmmm good food! We sat in the garden drinking cheap beer (a novelty after Aus and NZ!) Chatting with other guys who'd already covered South America getting all the tips we could! The next morning we wish'd we'd gone to bed at a decent hour as we were making our way to our bus at 8.30 am...however we were delighted to discover that the bus's were definitley 'deluxe'! We could drop our seats alomst the whole way back (semi-cama) with leg rests and films being shown for the journey! So while shelly slept the entire trip rich watched some debatable films...still, much better that the cockroach infested ones of Borneo...La serena here we come!
