Our trip to San Pedro started with a 16 hour bus ride with dinner and breakfast included! We didnt exactly get what we expected when we thought we were heading for a city but instead got dropped off in a seemingly very remote gravel carpark with only dirt tracks leading from it. 'That way 5 minutes' we were told so off we wandered! San Pedro actually turned out to be a wicked little town with only dirt roads but suprisingly some really cool bars and restaurants! We dumped our bags and headed out to arrange a salt flats tour that would see us spending 3 days in a 4x4 crossing the salt flats of Bolivia! It wasnt long before we had got chatting to another group of 6 wanting to do a tour and before long we were all signed up and headed out sandboarding!
This is the most knackering sport known to man (Death Valley indeed!) as once you have slid your way all the way down to the bottom there is only one very long, tiring and sweaty way back up! It was awesome though and after some inital face plants we all emerged victorious with sand in places we didnt even know we had...unfortunatley for Lauren a trouser ripping incident meant that she had even more sand than most, it was even more unfortunate for Rose, they were her trousers! when we had tired ourselves out with 2 hours of sandboarding we all jumped in the van and headed for 'moon valley' to see the sunset. We stopped off st some random rocks which the chileans claim are the 'three marys'just a tourist stop where they have named some random 3 rocks slighlty resembling statues!!The place we were at to see the sunset was amazing, you could see for at least 50 miles in each direction and the amount of different shades of orange and red whilst the sun set was beautiful. Shelly of course did her best to do her standard jumping in the air photo for the camera! After showering we were all in agreement it was going to take more than water to get rid of the sand we'd taken back with us so we gave up and headed out for yummy dinner and more importantly cocktails! (Unfortunately as we were 2500m above sea level, the next morning did not feel too good!)
The next day it was decided that mountain bikes were the way to go so we set out back into Death Valley- a logical choice! It was the most bizzare wilderness as we rode our way into the desert passing only a few stray dogs along route....just as we thought we were about to give up as we'd climbed up what felt like the biggest mountain in the whole entire world (actually a mere slope but in a bloody desert!) we couldnt believe it as Richards tyre began to hiss at some ridiculous rate and was soon as flat as a pancake! Suprisingly we were delighted with ourselves as we plastered on the glue and repaired the inner tube, unfortunately by the next corner we were back to where we started!...Anyhow after Shelly and Rose offering what little assistance they could an hour later we were set, and very sunburnt! After a trip through a very random tunnel in the middle of the desert it was time to roll our way back to town, with Rich sporting some very nice and bold vest marks!
