14th June - Off to Beijing!!
Had to get up early so we could catch the plane from Guangzhou to Beijing. We said our goodbyes to cooper and graham kindly came with us to the coach station to see us off and to make sure we were on the right coach to the airport.
As I am generally finding out with china I either can't stand up without banging my head on something or when I sit down the back rests our tiny. Anyway apart from being told the wrong departure gate the flight went fine and 3 hours later we arrive in Beijing. We had arranged for the hostel to pick us up at the airport, we arrived at the right gate but no body turned up, so we rang the hostel, and they said he was there looking for us. Then we waited... then with no one turning up we then rang again and he apparently was just setting off. This was frustrating but 45 minutes after the time they said they would pick us up he turned up and drove us to our hostel.
Beijing from the car looked much like DG until suddenly we took a right down a back street where our hostel was and it was down this tiny busy lit up street that you really it hits you "I'm in Beijing!".
The hostel is great, it has a really hippy backpacker vibe with loads of nationalities bumming around drinking beer and swopping stories.
After sorting out our stuff we thought we would walk around the back streets of where we were staying. An odd mix of people can be found round the streets plus some odd sights. For example, there's a teahouse/restaurant place that has a TV outside that seems to only play Charley Chaplin films. Its an odd sight to see when four Chinese people are laughing and watching a black and white Charley Chaplin film. Later do we realise that they absolutely love Mr Bean.
