Days 16 - 17. Today we leave Ljubljana after a very enjoyable and interesting 5 days. There was just so much to see and do, quirky back streets, which we somehow always seem to gravitate to, vaulted ceiling cafes and restaurants behind innocuous facades or riverside bars where we can sit and watch the passing parade. It all went to make our stay here well worth the visit.
Yesterday we went for a bike ride out to the Ljubljana Marshes that is now in part, a nature reserve interspersed with small, and old, villages and farms. The marshes were drained a couple of hundred years ago but still serve as the main acquafa for Ljubljana and surrounds. The day started off quite warm, around 28C and so a short stop by the river to cool off was welcomed, then on to Lake Podpec, where we had lunch on the terrace of a small rural restaurant. Feeling fully satisfied after a feed of fresh grilled trout from the lake, grilled pork and fresh salad it was time to get back on the bikes and push on. Then out of nowhere, a mighty gust of wind and a couple of claps of thunder and we thought we may have lingered a little too long over lunch, as we were only about half way into the ride. Undeterred, we left and as if as a sign from above, the wind stopped and we cycled on. Fortunately, we pulled up right outside an old inn just as the first drops of rain hit the road, so it was inside for a coffee. Then the skies really opened and the rain and hail just reinforced our good fortune of being at the right spot at the right time. After an hour, the rain had stopped so we took our chances and hit the road again, this time wearing rain jackets, just in case, after all we were in a former swamp and this is where the rain generally falls. Other than a very close lightening flash and even closer crack of thunder that nearly lifted us off our bikes and made me appreciate the insulation afforded by the rubber tyres between me and the ground, and the returning rain, there wasn't much else that happened. But it all went to make our last day in Ljubljana truly enjoyable.
This morning we awoke to a thick blanket of fog that came down to the roof tops and gave the city a very wintery look and feel. So as we are leaving today, shorts and tee shirts were changed for jeans and a down vest. No sooner were we at the railway station than the fog lifted and the sun came through. Now as we sit on the train to our next destination, Lake Bled, it's about 25C and not a cloud in the sky. As we have planned to do 7 days of bike riding here, I hope it stays that way!!!
