So here we are, it's our last day in Lake Bled and tomorrow we are off to Zagreb.
This at week has been full of great bike rides through little villages set in valleys formed by glaciers, up and over the never ending ridges of the Julian Alps, cycle paths that follow small rivers or through fields of corn and golden wheat, with barely another bike much less a car along the way. Even the small amount of time we had to ride on main roads where the traffic was moving well above the 90km/ hr speed limit, we never felt unsafe as the cars and trucks give cyclists at least 2m space when passing. On anything less than a main highway, again, cars were few and far between. Tractors, cows and giant snails were the main problem there. If I thought riding in Italy was good, Slovenia beats it by a mile.
Fortunately, we got through the week without Jean falling off her bike or having any near misses, but this morning I awoke reasonably convinced that I had strained a hamstring yesterday in a little encounter with a couple ( in their 20s) on mountain bikes who thought that an old bloke on a road bike might be a bit too slow for them to sit behind going up the hill. So as they passed, I stretched out and sat on their tail all the way to the top. It felt good at the time but sadly now I'm paying for it.
So this morning, in dire need of some strapping tape we set off from our eyrie and slowly walked down the hill to find a pharmacy. I was encouraged to continue as I hobbled along using a hotel umbrella as a walking stick by Jean's words of support such as " it's good that it's only one leg that's sore" and " I rode the same hills and my hamstrings are ok". She is lucky that I needed the umbrella as a support otherwise it might have been used as a weapon.
Anyway, the coffee and apple strudel eased the pain, we found the pharmacy and bought some tape so all is well in the world again.
So with a 7:00am pick up tomorrow morning, it's time to sort out the suitcases, front up for our last culinary challenge at the Hotel Triglav and contemplate the next few weeks in Croatia.
