25/2/10 - day 78.
got up around 10 and went into the town. there are old women that sit about on the streets selling bread and EVERYTIME you walk past they ask if you want any. they sell banana bread, coconut bread, chocolate bread and im sure others as well. so when my answer was yes to banana bread she nearly fell off her stool in shock! it was actually really good as well.
that afternoon i went to have a look around the rest of san pedro. once you get away from the main drag, its totally different. probably what the place used to be like before people came holidaying here. walking around, i was amazed ay how often i saw things like ''jesus loves you'', ''god loves you'' and other variations on these sentiments painted on the walls. not like graffiti, but properly printed on. like it was some sort of advert. the streets were cobble stone, not a tourist in sight, not an agency, nothing. then you turn a corner and the total opposite. they lay out coffee beans at the side of the street to dry on a big plastic sheet and stuff like that. and then down the road you have ''mike's pizza'' with its sign proclaiming ''breakfast lunch and dinner!'' breakfast?? must be an american owner.
saw the belgian guy i keep meeting everywhere i go and we went for a beer. also, id earlier bumped into a french guy id met in el salvador and an aussie/english couple id met in flores.
had dinner (spaghetti) that night with a movie they were showing in the restaurant. it was the men who stare at goats (wierd film). went back to the hostel where a wierd thing happened. an old fella staying there said he was hearing voices and could we check his room for him. he was also complaining of chest pains and a headache which was a worrying combination. it was pretty obvious he needed medical attention so after getting the hostel owner to call an ambulance, he was taken to hospital. 2 of the girls went with him and when they later came back they had some horrific tales. the nearest hospital was an hour and a half away, the ambulance drivers wouldnt take him unless the girls paid them(!!), they said the hospital was filthy, blood everywhere, kids covered in blood just sitting about, vomit on the floor, nobody at the hospital spoke english and the guy in trouble didnt speak any spanish. im pretty glad i didnt go, it sounded awful but was a hell of an insight into guatemalan health care.
rest of the night i hung out with the guys from last night at the hostel, played more wierd card games, and went to bed about 1am.
