Ok, so its been a little while since we updated this - we bad!
I think from where we left of we had one more day in Singapore which was spent at the Zoo. From there we crossed over the border into Malaysia up the coast to a place called Melaka (not the Zoo - Singapore). First impression of Malaysia was that the buses are extremely comfortable. Puts our public transport to shame! Second impression was that the place was extremely hot and had a bit of a funny smell - suspiciously sewage like - hmm. Also found that the taxi drivers aren't the most honorable of chaps - couldn't find our hostel but found his friends hostel ok.
Once we trekked to the right hostel we went and got our bearings in Melaka - a historic Dutch trading town that us Brits got our dirty little hands on. After dinner decided that we would be have an early night - unfortunately the hostel owner Howard would have absolutely none of it and insisted that we drank beer on the roof terrace. Not wanting to offend local sensibilities we duly obliged and ended up having quite a laugh with the other hostel guests. Spent the next day mainly trying to avoid the heat - ended up in both a Starbucks and a Maccy Ds I'm afraid to say. Also went to an Islamic centre which had a exhibition of torture on which was, um, interesting. In the evening the hostel owner took us on a tour of the China town market where we all eat far to much.
From Melaka we crossed the country to a place called Mersing. Stayed in an exquisite hotel for the night that cost less than a tenner then were up early to catch the ferry to a tropical island called Paula Tioman - a place consistently voted one of the worlds top ten scenic islands no less. I would say it was absolutely stunning - easily one of the prettiest place I have ever been. Also of the main tourist trial (owing to it being an arse to get to) so had a lot of charm. Quickly found ourselves a beach hut for the princely price of 3 pounds a night and settled into the routine of breakfast - snorkel - lunch - beach - dinner- beach bar - bed. The snorkeling was extremely good as the place is a marine park with live coral just metres from the beach. Also gorged myself on fresh BBQ fish - ended up with quite a taste for barracuda. Had to watch out for the local Monkeys and the 2 metre long monitor lizards mind.
After staying much longer than anticipated on Palua Tioman we headed back across the mainland to Kular Lumpa. Afraid that I haven't really got anything nice to say about the place but will try - um our hostel was nice - the air con in the central market was good - only saw the rats at night……
Moving swiftly on we are now in the Cameroon Highlands. An area where us Brits had the foresight to cover in tea plantations - makes it look very pretty! We are currently staying in a very nice guest house up in the hills. Spent yesterday on a tour of the area visiting the tea plantations and what not. Met a couple of nice people at the hostel and had dinner with them last night.
Plan from here is Penage, an island called Langkawi then island hoping up the coast of Thailand. Chance that internet is going to be a bit hit and miss on the islands (we barely had electricity on Palau Tioman!) so prob be another long missive when we update this again. I will try and add some more photees on facebook mind.
