So hello from Singapore! Since the last update we've been to Sydney and made our way here to the very, very, very hot and humid singapore. I'm starting to miss the snow - just a little bit!
Our last proper day in New Zealand was mostly spent at the beach. Allan (my family friend) very kindly took us to the beach where we hired surfboards for a couple of hours which was great fun. After lunch we had a drive round some of the local sights. We were sad to be leaving as we'd had such a great time driving around in our camper and New Zealand is such a beautiful country (I could gush for ages about Milford sound - you'll just have to wait till we get back!). But it was time to move on to Sydney.
So, after the slight alarm at the sight of our hostel in Sydney (it looked like the sort of place you just want to keep walking past but it wasn't actually that bad) we headed out to explore the city. Very different from the laid back cities of New Zealand! First stop the Opera House and harbour. This area looks great in the photos but in real life we thought it looked a bit dated and the bridge wasn't as big as I thought it was going to be! One of the best bits about the area was the flying fox bats which were huge and were circling all around the opera house.
Next day we had a good look round and went on the mono rail to Darling Harbour. We decided to go to the Imax as we've never been before and it was fantastic! We saw Ultimate Wave Tahiti featuring Kelly Slater. It was the best 3D I've ever seen. We then went to the aqaurium as Richard wanted to see a duck billed platypus! To his dismay it never came out of its burrow despite us going back several times to check it. We did see dugongs though which were great, and a big crocodile and sharks and rays. We spent the evening at The Rocks, an area near the harbour bridge which had a night market selling yummy food so I was happy!
Next day we caught the ferry (ferries go all over the harbour and beyond and are a great way to get around) to Manly, one of the Northern beaches. It was great - long sandy beach with great surf. Richard went surfing but I was very lazy and decided to work on my tan which is a very slow process!
Bondi the following day was a let down! I though it was going to be a huge beach but its really small. The surf was rubbish and there was a tsunami warning so the beach was going to be closed. We decided not to stay and walked instead to Coogee along the cliffs. It was a much better beach! There was no tsunami in the end - we'd been hoping to see one! Took another ferry ride then we had to go on a steak search for Richard obviously. I am still very much veggie! Found a place where you could cook your own on the bbq. I never made it to Palm beach, better known as Summer Bay in home and away as it was quite a bit further up the coast. Never mind, I'll just have to go next time...
And so to Singapore. We are staying in the Little India area which is great. Today we've been walking round Chinatown and the old colonial parts of the city. Had dinner in the Indian hawker malls. Its a lovely city. Very clean and green and it feels very spacious. The Chinese and Indian districts are fantastic. Such a crazy mix of smells and colours people everywhere. Tomorrow we are going to the zoo and botanic gardens then over to Sentosa Island as there is a luge there. It was so much fun in Queenstown we want to have another go! On thursday we leave Singapore to get a bus over the border into Malaysia. We are heading to Melaka and after that we don't know!
Thank you for all the messages posted on our blog, its nice to know we've not been forgotten!
