Weather conditions really screw up what you can do of a day...
So Sarah got one of only two flights out of Auckland to Wellington on Tuesday night, which is lucky! All the others had been cancelled due to snow/thunderstorms/craziness. So yesterday, we got up and went to Te Papa, which is the museum of New Zealand on the harbour/wharf. As we got outside the backpackers, we were literally robbed of our breath, because the wind was blowing THAT strongly in our faces. It was quite awkward.
So we made to Te Papa, thoroughly soaked by the rain and the wind, and had a hot chocolate to warm ourselves up. And then went and explored all the exhibits. There was a really disgusting real colossal squid that they had preserved, and there was an earthquake explanation place. After lunch (which was TRE Delisioso! and I tried Assam and Manuka tea (called Gisbourne Dawn)) we went to the Blood, Fire, Earth exhibition which was all about settling New Zealand, and how things have changed. And then we had to stop for a cup of tea. And then we decided as it was now half 5, we might as well go to the cinema, which was conveniently across the road! So we went and saw the last Harry Potter!
We were then really quite tired, so we just came back to the backpackers and went to sleep!
This morning, we decided we would quite like to go on the cable car up the mountain/hill. But first we went through the rain to the I-Site, to see if there was anything else we could do indoors in Wellington. Turns out, not really.
So we went to find the cable car place, but when we got there, they were closed because of the power surges that had happened on Monday (during freaky snowthunderstorm) and weren't opening until they were sure that everything was fixed. Which was a shame, cus we quite wanted to do that!
So instead, we decided to go to the art gallery, where they have an exhibition called Oceania. The art part of this exhibition was in the gallery, and the objects/artifacts part was at Te Papa, so we got tickets for it, and walked around. In the gallery they were showing a film featuring From Scratch, who are a trio a bit like Stomp. The film that we watched was a winner of a Cannes Prize in 2004, and the music was about the islands that got destroyed by the nuclear bombs in Bikini.
After we had walked around all the gallery, we went over the road to Te Papa for lunch, as I was REALLY hungry, and to look around the Oceania exhibition there, which took about an hour.
So all in all, the past two days has been spent mostly looking at museum things, which though really interesting, is not what I imagined I'd be doing in Wellington. Though it's mostly the weather's fault for the limitations of activities. It's really quite cold here, even though it hasn't snowed since Monday in the CBD, and it has been raining most of the last two days. Tonight we're going for dinner with Sarah's housemate who's been working in Wellington for a couple of weeks. So that should be good! Though we are really sleepy at the moment!
And I still really want to watch Lord of the Rings! So it'll be an extended version extravaganza when I get home!!!
I might completely release my inner geek and go on a location tour around Wellington before I go! :)
In fact, I think I will. I don't care about the weather!
There's someone playing the bagpipes outside, but I can't tell where it's coming from! Probably outside the train station. Only Scottish people would be playing outside in this weather...
Good luck to all of you getting results today!
