So we left you after the Fish Bone Fiasco in a Bangkok hospital but have now had just shy of 2 glorious weeks on the Thai Islands.
We started on the east coast, visiting Koh Tao, Phangnan and Samui. We were both pretty pooped and so were probably the only under-70s on the islands tucked up by 9pm for the first few nights! Sadly we missed the full moon party on Phangnan otherwise I'm sure we would have been raving till dawn. Dan the dolphin has been enjoying much snorkelling, though after visiting 2 separate 'Shark Points' is somewhat disappointed (?!) no sharks were spotted.
It was this week we celebrated 3 anniversaries: 1 year since we first left the UK, 3 years married, and 10 years since we met... Celebrated in Thai island style: Jack Johnson, a beachside bar at sunset, a beer, but having had almost no sleep in hospital we fell asleep at 8.30pm and left the kids to party on! Luckily the Senior Hiles have some more exciting plans for their Ruby wedding anniversary today… congratulations!
We then headed across the peninsula to the west coast and Koh Phi Phi. Feeling much fitter we celebrated with a bottle of gin, and 3 days to drink it (Nanna Mary style)! More snorkelling and gorgeous beaches, and even braved the odd bar. There has been the odd thunder storm which has made for some rather edgy boat trips.
There has of course been the obligatory trip to 'The Beach' Beach. We arrived in weather too wild to pull into the actual bay, so accessed it by jumping off our boat, swimming across some seriously turbulent sea, and climbing a rope ladder and then a short walk to arrive at The Bay. Moby is playing in my head and teenage memories of scantily clad Leo spearfishing are flashing before me… my stomach knots in anticipation… we arrive… …to no less than 200 Chinese tourists jumping off nosiy speed boats. 'The Beach' is actually only 2 meters deep (the tide is in), the waves are pretty rough, and the sea slick with petrol. Gutted! Luckily the Chinese only stop for 5 minutes to take their photos, and they get back on their speed boats, Dan poses in the shallows with a stick and if you block your ears and squint a bit you are practically there….
Anyway, we have a week now in Singapore and Malaysia, and we'll be off to Bali on the 16th.
