We arrived in Laos 5 days ago and have been based in Luang Prabang - 'Asias most romatic city' - and it has indeed been gorgeous. Monks wander the 30-odd temples in the old town, originally built along the Mekong River by the French - meaning a delicious selection of cafes and restaurants too.
It was however a shaky start as we arrived by what can only be described as a toy plane, but several Laos Beers in (and having passed through 2 storms sucessfully) things eased a little and the views - I had to admit - were fab.
The highlight of Laos was visiting an Elephant sanctuary (rescued ex-logging elephants) and taking a ride - we had a 3.2 ton female elephant who was missing a few toes from when she stood on a land mine. As the alpha female she had a great time spraying all the other riders but we escaped dry!
If you don't mind the dawn start you can watch the monks do their morning procession past their temples, we managed it yesterday but were soon back in bed!
Later we fly to Cambodia for 8 days to go to Angkor Wat (the daddy of all temples apparantly) and a few other spots.
