Day 4 ... highlights Portabello Road & the London Eye & Pimms
... our day began with a trip to the famous antique flea & new market on the legendary Portabello Road. Throngs of people ... literally hip to hip steadily the whole time we were in the trenches. I picked up a few trinkets ... one lovely antique item from a seller named Jeremy who was thrilled with my purchase indicating "You did well for your first Portabello Road purchase", and had I not done so he was willing to take her back and keep her ... I also visited Appletree Boutique - specializing in women's clothing - purchasing a few charming pieces. Sabine picked up a few trinkets as well ... heart lock earrings, cute little Beefeater earrings, and a lovely china mosaic cello pin. The photo in today's blog has Sabine in the foreground watching a bubble-maker extraordinaire make 3-4 foot sized bubbles ... actually had to talk her into popping them!
Afterward we made our way to the London Eye where we again were dealing with throngs and EVEN more throngs of people. It really is hard to get used to this many people in one place - I don't know how Londoners manage! While waiting for our queue for the London Eye we went into a little area on the bank of the Thames River with amusement rides and freaky side shows ... Sabine and I went on the "The Superflyer" ... loved the slogans of this ride:
- "Touch the Clouds as you Ride our ... Splendiferous Spinning Attraction"
- "Experience the Fantasmagorcal Ride of a Lifetime"
While still awaiting our queue, I experienced a wonderful cocktail called "Pimms" - it is a Gin liqueur mixed with lemonade spritzer and combined with fresh oranges, apples, cucumber and peppermint ... better than good this is!!!
To end our day, we decided to finally bite the bullet and partake in some English fish n' chips. We attended a British pub called "The Shakespeare" and had authentically delicious battered cod with tartare sauce & lemon, chips with malt vinegar, and mushy peas ... brilliant!
On the ride back to the hotel experienced yet another interesting encounter on the "Tube" [underground] ... I honestly never tire of people watching ... people truly are strange, freaky & weird .
