Got woken up at about 5 this morning by Pat telling me the power was off and that there was an alarm going off in the building. She was worried there was a fire. But if a concern but the power came back on and the alarm stopped so must have been ok.
We get picked up by our driver from Hue just before 8am and started our trip to Hue up over the Hai Van pass which is a mountainous winding road. They have built a tunnel which has cut the time off the trip a bit but you miss the great views. We stopped at the top where the Americans built bunkers during the war which gave them great vantage points. From there we stopped at Lang Co beach before hitting Hue just before lunch.
The hotel Supreme Palace is really nice. Great staff who speak good English and the room is really nice- best so far. Has got a bath too.
The town of Hue is on the Perfume river and as we found out has some of the most persistent hawkers along the waterfront trying to sell you "very cheap" boat rides on the river . They just wouldn't go away ! You nearly have to be rude to ignore them but eventually they lose interest .
We booked a couple of tours through the hotel for a full day city tour tomorrow only $15Usd and one for Wednesday for $20 to go to the DMZ which was the buffer zone between the North and the South during the war. We get to go to what's left of Khe Sanh battlefield which is a bit exciting as that's always been my favourite song and I will have to hum a few bars when we are there just to add to the moment
