We found so much to do in Mount Gambier that we stayed for two nights at the campsite in the centre of town. At only £15.00 per night for a powered site it was an absolute bargain.
Mount Gambier is at the heart of a volcanic region and many thousands of years ago the volcanos collapsed in on themselves creating lakes and sinkholes. The photo on this blog is taken at Umpherstone Sinkhole which has been transformed into a beautiful tranquil garden over many levels. Temperatures have been up to 40 degrees today so it was lovely to wander in the shade.
We had watched an hour long documentary this morning which detailed the formation of the sinkholes and lakes and also went into one of the underground caverns which is open to the public. The underground lakes flow under the town and divers need to be at level three to be able to access them.
We are finding that sightseeing in this area of Australia is very reasonable as all our activities today came in at about £8.00 each, and no car parking fees either!
