Today we decided to visit Cape Reinga which is a very long peninsula, and the most Northern tip of NZ, it can be reached by vehicle along 90 mile beach but we decided to fly in an 8 seater plane. Another early start as we were picked up by coach and taken to the small airport at Kerikeri.
The flight took us over Paihia and Russell and over the Bay of Islands towards the Cape, the flight was approximately 45 minutes long but to drive would have taken 4/5 hours.
As we approached the grassed runway the pilot said don't worry when we land, the runway is up hill and and we have to turn sharp left, but all was well!!
We were then picked up by mini bus. Cape Reinga is a very spiritual area in Maouri culture as its where the spirits depart this world.
This is also the point where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea, as the two meet whirl pools are created.
After visiting the Cape we made our way to some huge sand dunes where we did sand boarding another first and a great experiance.
After a cup of tea and home made cakes we had our return flight back to Kerikeri, another great excursion.
