Today we ventured over the Burrard Bridge to the H.R Burrard Space Centre. We managed to time it so we were wandering just as the Vancouver Marathon was underway, so we did our bit by cheering and applauding at the runners whenever we saw some. The bridge was closed to traffic which meant it was a lovely quiet walk (apart from all of the cheering and cowbells, but that's ok) and the bits surrounding the Space Centre were very quiet. At first we thought it was closed, but that was just because of an abscence of cars. The only people around were cyclists or the "Pff, it's only a mile or two's walk" people.
Once inside we went into the planetarium bit to watch a movie about Gallieo, and then stuck around for a glimpse at the night sky. Very pretty. After that we decided to hit up a Triple O's burger place, had a nice chat with the girl behind the counter about English accents, and marveled at chips with the potato skins left on.
Our tummies full we wandered to Granville Island which has art galleries and a public market. That was ok if a bit touristy, although I had a nice chat with a man selling maple syrup (he sends his regards to Vivian Westwood and thinks she should have designed the dress for "the wedding") and we met Jack "The Bear" Latek.
Jack was a very interesting character. He's collecting pin badges and junk for mentally ill people to make things out of, and he gave us some plastic coils ("Put them on your bags, they're for friendship"), a small carved wooden fish ("I like to give people projects, you can paint that however you like") and told us about the turtle living in the pond across the road. We promised to post him some things from England and have a beer for him, and then we went to see the turtle at the pond. The turtle was sunning himself on a rock. We said hello, took his photo and went on our way to try and find the secret of happiness.
