Satin Shoes Go Camping
To my dear (dare I suggest, captive?) audience: this is my final post from South America. Here I am in Buenos Aires, awaiting my taxi to the airport, and the adventure is winding down. It has been wonderful, but I am tired and smile as I think of coming home.
But what of the return to Buenos Aires? BA represented warmth compared to the Antartic chill of Bariloche and I made the most of the weather by shop-shop-shopping my little heart out (you get tax back! huurah! It's all fort he "Work Wardrobe", you understand) and doing a little sightseeing. Met some lovely ladies in my new hostel, this time based in the swish and leafy Palermo district. Together we (Raven, Fabi and I) scouted out the famous cemetary in Recoletta where Argentina's presidents rest (those that are still held in favour), as well as the nation's darling - Evita. She's regarded almost as a saint around here, pretty much eclipsing her husband's contribution to the country as president. Resting there also, basking in the sun's rays, are about a thousand cats. Tres strange, considering this is a dog city.
Hit San Telmo street market on Sunday following a scrummy sushi lunch (so cheap here!) which was still a sight to behold despite the cold, grey skies. Poked around a million vintage clothing shops as well as every kind of tat imaginable (polystyrene chicken-squawkers, anyone?) and had a restorative slice of cheesecake at the local friendly gay Pride Cafe (entertaining).
Apart from that, I've mostly been eating a LOT (morrocan, more "asado" - basically steak) having the odd drink ,and just soaking up what it's like to live in this city. It's a pretty easy place to exist in, I can see why a lot of travellers I meet end up living here for a while; lots of European students studying here too.
But now I'm off to Miami! (Without any liquids whatsoever) Then to catch a connection to the Cayman Islands where I will work on my tan and come back to you all rested and healthy again. Hopefully my backpack will not burst on the plane (my little backpack broke - quality Bolivian workmanship - so had to cram the lot into my big one. Tight. Very tight.) and there will be lots of London fun soon!
Ciao ciao,
Keiko x
