After a quick 3 hour nap, the Choley family all got up and headed to the airport for our 2:10am flight out of town. This is the flight that people cringed about (including me) when I mentioned we were travelling with all three kids. The flight that brought more people than just us anxiety.
Fortunately for us, this flight came with the wall attached bassinet row, so for the long 11.5 hour portion of our travel, we had a separate place for Wilder to sleep that wasn't on Mommy. One might think it was quite a luxury for him, but really it was the circulation in my left arm that appreciated it the most.
After groggily walking past a very, VERY long line of people at Taipei's airport, we reach a point where we are asked for our passports. Apparently, we were to wait in that line to go through a short and fast security checkpoint before our connecting flight. The woman doesn't really seem to mind, asks to see our boarding passes and then shoos us through a side gate directly to an empty security line as others that waited in that line watch on. Am I dreaming? Is this real?
The second plane leg was a short 3 hours - my left arm has almost regained feeling (several hours later). Arriving in Hanoi was wonderful - the familiar feel of being somewhere foreign brings me immediate happiness and calm. Additionally, I very much enjoy the wonder that these kids will experience, but let's be honest - I'm sweaty, exhausted, and I desperately need to brush my teeth. So, let's get through customs and get to a shower.
As we are walking up to immigration, the lines are very, very long. A woman comes up and directs us to walk up to the front. I feel weird about this - other kids were in line, but again….I need that shower. We are ushered in and a new lane is opened briefly to check us out and move us through. Is this seriously happening again? How is this possible?
Driving through the streets is making me really hungry. And for some reason, as I'm attempting to pronounce the Vietnamese words on the signs I am suddenly driven to quietly sing Mmm Bop to myself.
At the time of this blog, It's 2:00am back home, we've been traveling for over 24 hours. We have a family goal to make it to 6pm Hanoi time before lying down for the night, which would be 4am Seattle time.
Added note at 5:47pm: Wilder and Rory both passed out at 5:15p. FINE BY ME! We can acclimate more tomorrow. Nighty night!
