Hey everyone,
I know i have been lazy with my blog for a couple of weeks, I will try
update everyone now!
Kuala Lumpur
I have been using KL as my base i.e leaving my big backpack there and
traveling light. So far In Malaysia I have been to Cameron Highlands,
Georgetown Penang, Langkawi and Melaka.
Melaka
I met up with some girls who I met in KL. We went to the fort, mini
Malaysia, museum, walked round the old colonial buildings and went to
China town. At night we went to the sound and light show- it was
pretty crude but I learned a lot about the 400 year occupation of
Melaka and its fight for independence.
KL
I made many friends in KL and got on well with the hostel staff. I was
offered a job there which I took- its not paid but I get free
accommodation, free Internet, washing and use of facilities. The main
reason I took the job was so I could learn how to run a hostel. I
shadowed the manager for a few days and have slowly been taking on
more responsibilities. I have also worked night shifts...its actually
lot harder than I originally thought...but it has its rewards and I
have met so many great people as a result of it! My official start
date is 24th Jan to 10 Feb 2008 when I get back from Borneo.
I spent Christmas at the hostel in KL where i was in charge of the
barbecue. We had a party and karaoke. Then Christie who helped out at
the hostel left to work in Borneo a helicopter pilot giving joy rides
(that's a cool job!) so we had a farewell party for her! Then for
New Years I managed to get a whole group together to go to the
petronas towers and watch the concert/fireworks and count down new
year! The journey to the towers was just as eventful as there were
huge crowds (thousands) of people in the street just spraying each
other with snow spray...we joined in! As we were getting nearer to the
tower we saw a serious fight which shocked us all...and it rained a
little but as we got to the tower, the rain stopped and the fun began
as we waited for 2008!
Singapore - 01-01-08 to 06-01-08
Started badly from the airport...as i was "screened" and it took ages
and my coach driver didn't wait for me. It was 4am and i had to hang
round for ages before another bus took me to near my hostel! Also my
hostel is packed with students who are staying here until they find
apartments so no-one really wants to go out...so hard to be meet
people..also the hostel is a bit of a mess even though it has top
rating on hostelworld..its things like the students stole all the
adaptors from the TV/DVD etc so I cant put TV or DVD at night when i
just want to relax! Students! I hate them now! haha
So I arrived at my hostel at 6am and went straight to bed! I am
staying near Arab street and there is the most amazing and oldest
mosque right next to my hostel. I will pray Friday prayer there
tomorrow. So on the first day I went looking for a camera, i wanted
the Nikon D40X and went to Sim Lim and Mustafas to compare prices with
the lowest price 750 Singapore dollars...when I went back to that guy
he denied it and said it was an outrageous price. One of the other
shop owners told me that he sees foreigners walking round the shopping
centres for days comparing prices and that other shop owners play
games...and will say low prices in the hope you will come back and
they will sell you another camera or you will be so tired that you
will buy anything! So this shop owner shows me a promotion in an Olympus magazine, and the camera has loads of freebies and 3 years extended warranty...it sounds good so i ask him is everything incuded and even point to the promotion! He said yeah so I paid. Then when its comes to picking up my sruff he does not include half the things and I told him and he said oh i'll check and then says promotion is finished! I asked for a refund but he No refunf. So he didnt give me all the things but i bargained and for a few extras and stayed calm as he got a bit aggresive. Anyway I ended up buying an Olympus E-410 Camerawith 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 and 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 Zuiko Lenses. I got
spare powerful battery, UV filter, tripod, 2gb card, and a bag! I have
3 years international warranty which is good...that's if the guy i
bought it from wasn't dodgy! I also went to little India and saw the
main temple there.
The next day I was woken up by one of the sleepy sam staff who knocked
on my bunk bed and told me to get up and take my stuff down as they
were doing "spring cleaning"! Its crazy because i paid to stay there
for 5 nights and don't expect to be woken and not allowed back from
11.30am to 4.30pm! I went to Orchard Road, which was not that
impressive as I had no money to spend! Its just a long road full of
shops! I also walked round Arab street and eat at Zam Zams where the
locals hangout. I had paratha and curry and Nasi Goreng...which is
rice with a mix of something, I had chicken. I feel fat right now!
So I back at my hostel now, on the Internet as I cant watch TV. I
having been leaning to use my new camera so think I will go and play
with that!
