Thank you all for your messages of sympathy either through this messageboard, email or telephone, they are much appreciated.
Dad was receiving chemo and radiotherapy treatment for throat cancer but contracted pneumonia and died quite quickly.
The funeral is being held in Kent on 17 December and we will be returning to South Africa on 28 December to resume our trip.
Thank you for your support

Hi ! So great to hear that you are back in Africa !! And surprise - surprise - the rest of us are still here too !!! Looked at a map and decided - that in spite of the weird new breed of politicians - we'll just stay put ! The Allens are back from Australia - had a great time. We are hoping that they will not disappear on the rest of us soon. They are off to Costa Rica in December - and then we'll spend New Year together in Cape St Francis. Really looking forward to that. We're staying at the Backpackers - with our kids and about 100 of their closest friends. So Ralph - that is the place to be for New Year celebrations !! Summer has eventually arrived - we're having really amazing weather and enjoying the warmth. Dylan has started gliding seriously - great excitement for all - especially my Dad. Otherwise all is same as usual. Business is picking up - slowly but steadily - so can't complain. Especially in these turbulent economic times. Enjoy your trip to Zambia - and get back into Africa mode ! All the very best

Looks like I narrowly escaped a North American visit from you guys....close call.
I'm still following your journeys with envy, especially now that I'm heading back into the workforce after 6 months off...
Safe travels
Steve
I am pleased to say that the musty smell from the bedrooms has now gone.
Now I must concentrate on that large rat that is obviously stealing my wine during the night
bon voyage

Hi Steve
Sounds like I looked like Brad Pitt at one point, so I take comfort in that.
See you 31 February 2009

It has been several months now since I looked on your website...it's funny how the photos shatter my long term memories. Ralph doesn't look like Brad Pitt after all...more like a young Boris Karloff.
If you are stopping in Dorset October please avoid week days...oh and I'm away weekends too.
Love

Hi Jola and the Biologist
I don't think Hemingway would have been able to walk to the thunder eggs or get away from a grizzly. If only a grizzly had gone for Angela. This is the first time we've had travel insurance for 2 years!
Hurry up and get some jobs sorted out in Alaska, Homer would be an ideal location for us or maybe somewhere closer to Denali. No chance though, Brad's Resume would struggle to attract a job even in the Lower 48!
Watch out for moose on the roads!

Hi Heike
Thanks for comments, wish I could earn some of Bill Bryson's money!
Watching South African politics with interest now that Mbeki has resigned. Nice to see the ANC youth wing with a complete disregard for the judicial system, doesn't inspire any confidence at all.
Having said that an Alaskan senator is being investigated about accepting free work on his private home renovations, and various representatives are under investigation!
Hope you get spring/summer soon and that the Allens enjoy Australia. I suspect that it may become a popular destination for South Africans when Zuma gets in to the presidency!
