I took a day trip to Siena from Florence. I heard it was beautiful and it was, I just wasn't overly impressed. What I liked about it is that it's very medieval, lots of brick. I bought the all inclusive sight seeing ticket, which included 2 museums, a church, a crypt and a baptistery. Most of the sights are in the same area. The Duomo is quite impressive (large, with stained glass and statues of popes). Below the church, a 'crypt' was found in 1999 during an excavation. The cavern is lined with colourful, 13th century frescos, quite well preserved considering they've been sealed off for centuries. The museum dell'opera has some interesting statues ad other pieces that used to hang in the duomo. They also have relics. I have seen so many tiny bones in fancy gold and jeweled cases... It's kinda creepy. Here there is a panoramic view at what would have been the top of a new cathedral, had the Black Death not halted construction in 1348. I got a good view of Siena, surrounding mountains and the storm and lightening coming in lol.
Siena also features Il Campo, a shell shaped piazza that holds horse races twice a year (called Pallo.) When I saw it there was a bunch of restaurants and tourists. Finally I went to San Francisco square and church. The church was huge but mostly empty- I liked it, it was different. The stained glass was beautiful too.
That was about it for Siena except that I tripped off a curb getting on the bus and I'm pretty sure I sprained my big toe, meaning I've been limping along for days :( It sucks but it'll be fine.
