I was excited to come to Capri because Brittany told me it was one of her favourites in Italy. Just a 50 minute hydrofoil ride from Naples, Capri is an adorable island with beaches, hiking and shopping. I chose to see the towns (Capri and Anacapri, higher up) and do some good ol' touristy things.
You arrive in Marina Grande, then take a funicular to Capri. Anacapri is higher yet. I must say, I don't know how drivers in Capri manage. Practice I suppose. Those roads are narrow! Like- one car, maybe 1 and a half can fit driving normally. Their buses (smaller than usual) always honk before sharp corners and at least 5 times, my bus was about 2 inches from another vehicle in passing. It was crazy! Oh and some roads were like on a cliff lol. Just a bit of rock and ocean below!
First I went to Anacapri and took a bus to Grotta Azzurra - a cave just off the ocean, with a very small entrance. It was cool- the water was extra blue by the entrance, reflecting the sun. Roman statues were found here and legend has it that spirits live in the cave. Ghosts or not, it was really pretty.
Next I took the chair lift (individual chairs so cute lol) up to Mount Solaro. Capri has some big mountains for such a small island! What an amazing view. I knew I wouldn't have time to hike to Capri's famous 3 rocks, Grotta Di Matermania, so I was relieved to see they were visible from the mountain. Then again, not much wasn't. Both towns were visible, as were some amazing looking fishing and swimming spots. If only I had the time to see it all up close!
Lastly I looked around the towns and did some window shopping. They grow fruit on the island (I saw peaches and cherries!) and some restaurants had friggin huge lemons on display. They sold a lot of lemonchello (lemon liquor, good for digestion) too, so that must be a specialty. Capri has all the fancy expensive stores so i stuck to looking. A lot of jewelry stores had real coral too.
If I had more time I would definitely hike around because there is some gorgeous looking natural beauty on the island. I'd also go swimming. Although the beaches are pebbly, it looked like there were some stunning rocky swim spots, akin to Manarola in Cinque Terre.
