Ciudad Real(ly Nice)
When we woke to heavy mist in Puebla de Don Rodrigo, we could not have anticipated our best cycling day so far. As it burnt off and the visibility improved, a more typically Spanish landscape revealed itself.
A crisp beautiful morning through ancient olive groves, rolling volcanic hills and shaded pine forests led into a brightly sunny afternoon. Fuelled with regular scheduled stops for pastry and peanut butter sarnies, we made good time even though we were now passing between peaks of up to 900m. This may also have had something to do with the turbo-charging effects a cafe solo has on Denise. We must remember this for future reference.
The 13th century Ciudad Real was everything we had wished for, with decent restaurants, culture-a-plenty, a welcoming outdoor society (see picture) and, best of all, a laundry (mmm, smell that fabric conditioner). A couple of days rest here has hopefully set us up for the charge to the East coast.
Tomorrow, we´re off to Valdepeñas. Perhaps some careful sampling of the local produce will be in order.
We´ve had a chance to see the posts on the message board - keep them coming. It´s great to hear from you all.
