Today is the day we fly out from Bangkok to Chiangmai! Had a bit of a panic last night as we checked our flight status online but there was no sign of our flight at all! After searching for a while it turned out that Air Asia has changed the airport they use for domestic flights from Suvarnabhumi international airport to Don Muang airport which are about 50km apart! We booked our flights in April and this changed in October so we are lucky we checked that otherwise we would have been at the wrong airport!
We gave in to temptation (and less hassle) at the airport and signed up with a tour company there to do an elephant safari on Wednesday, this includes lunch on the day, pickup and drop off to our hotel and also they offered to book us a free taxi to take us from the airport to our hotel today! To be fair it was less of a taxi and more like a beat up 20 year old Mercedes but the driver was very nice and chatty and it beat queuing for a taxi or braving public transport which isn't as good in Chiangmai.
We were breath taken by the beauty of our hotel lobby when we arrived and check in wasn't as difficult as we read it can be in some reviews. The hotel is absolutely huge, like a massive maze of grand hallways and staircases! Almost too big for the amount of people here, there seems to be more staff than guests which is worrying! Lol.
We got a bit lost trying to find the pool and ended up in a wing of the hotel that must have been under renovation as it was pretty dark and scary so we got back in the lift and headed to the 1st floor...with a short sharp drop and a BUMP! The lift doors wouldn't open and then all of the lights switched off and it was pitch black! We waited for a few mins and nothing happened so we pushed the emergency bell and someone came to tell us they were resetting the lift. I opened our doors and could see that we had dropped slightly below the first floor exit! It took them about half an hour of prying the doors open and the lights going off and on again before they could get us out. Me and Jane discussed asking the hotel to upgrade our room but I think we chickened out by time they had got us out as they were so very apologetic and kept asking for our room number, so you never know we may still get something free!?
A nice end to this day was having the swimming pool to ourselves which was very pretty at night and then having dinner in quite a grand restaurant with a pianist playing a baby grand and singing some greats like Clapton and the Beatles lol.
Ps the picture is a sign that was in the taxi we took to the airport. We think it meant no farting!
