I set my alarm to wake us up at 10am so we could have breakfast, however I didn't notice that my phone had changed time zones so we ended up walking around the deserted hostel for a while before we looked outside and realised it was pitch black and it was actually 3am Thai time! Neither of us could get back to sleep so we had breakfast as soon as it opened at 08:30 and after a pretty stressful first first day we decided to take it easy and planned a nice walk around Lumpini park which was about 10 mins walk from our hostel.
The park was massive and had a nice lake so we rented a pedallo! Whilst floating along the lake I saw a log floating that resembled an aligator with its head out of the water so I thought I would have a joke with Jane and pointed it out and started to peddle closer!..as we got closer this thing started to look less and less like a log and more like an anaconda or something so we swiftly (as swiftly as you can in a pedallo!) turned around and continued around the lake, thinking they would never let us pedal on a lake with animals like that in it so we must have just been seeing things.
Two minutes later we saw another "log" however this one was moving and a local was throwing food to it! The fear on our faces must have looked hilarious, this anaconda looking reptile saw us coming and submerged! We pedalled like never before lol, with Jane edging closer and closer to my side of the pedallo doing this whole nervous laughter or ill cry thing and I was looking at all the ripples around our very low sided pedallo thinking any one could be an anaconda about to pounce!! We passed the place where we saw the first "log" and that had now disappeared which for me concreted the fact that we had been selected for death in some kind of sick Thai tourist game! We saw another few people getting on the pedallos and thought shortly about telling them what we had saw but there was still a while before we reached safety so it was us or them! Lol.
When we got back to the hostel I googled Lumpini park and found lots of videos of monitor lizards!! I even found one where they were eating one of thier own...and these things are big! Needless to say we won't be going on that lake again! Haha.
We popped out for some food and got approached by a man claiming to be the manager of the local macdonalds and also an ex Thai international footballer! He got us talking about our travel plans and we told him we were planning on visiting the grand palace tomorrow, to which he replied that the temple was closed on Sundays and we still had time to go today! It also just so happens that he has a friend with a tuk tuk that can take us there! Now uncertain whether this guy was being honest or trying to get our money we told him we were leaving...not before getting him to take a picture of us and Ronald Macdonald first though!
