Hey everybody-before you get to excited, this isnt an update for Fiji (we've only been here two days)......we're updating you on our campervan adventure! Also-this is Tom doing this diary entry....for the first time-my virginal experience-so dont blame me if its s***e!! & for the swearing.....Â
Its so much fun & we think definetly the best way to see New Zealand (as long as you know where the tourist attractions are). Where to begin hey!? Well we rented this little 2 berth campervan in Auckland for a week. It had everything we needed-a cooker, sink, fridge, bed, etc-apart from a toilet (so Rachel says-there was a bucket though....but thats another story! Hehe!). & for you petrol heads out there-it had more power (& weight) then any of my cars put together.....2.4 litres of pure muscle!!
The route we decided on, was to travel east of Auckland along the coast to Gisborne & then cut back up to Auckland, to catch our flight to beautiful Fiji! All in all we drove about 1340km in 7 days, so not bad going if you ask me! & I did ALL the driving!!! Although to be fair, it was pretty technical driving with most of the roads being bendy as hell, with sheer drops into gorges or the sea! Twas quite nerve racking! Rachy did do some very impressive bay parking in one of the campsites though......so be proud Pat & David! She did well!
Obviously, as you'd expect, the scenery was pretty damn spectacular; with amazing beaches & coves, mountainous forests & farmland as far as you could see. Also, its quite off the beaten track as well, so you quite literally have to carry all your supplies around with you (lucky we had a fridge hey!). With it being so remote, we only stayed at a campsite two nights (& that was primarily to fill the ol' girl up with water & to "do a number two" in an actual toilet.....if you know what I mean!). The rest of the time, we'd literally just find a quiet beach & park by the side of it. We'd see the most amazing sunsets & wake up to beautiful views of the coastline everyday. Then we'd have a jog on the beach, have a swim or do some exercise's.
We did some pretty impressive cooking as well......hope your impressed mum!? & have rediscovered porridge! Absolutely awsome stuff-really does the job! So all in all a good time was had & we'd thourghly recommend doing it....& its great value for money! Im (Tom) seriously considering getting some sort of campervan when we get back to the Blighty-their so useful & im quite up for travelling around the UK & France in my/our spare time. So keep your eye's peeled everyone back home!
Oh-we also spent about an hour one afternoon designing & making a toilet on the beach for Rachel to use (rather then her peeing in a bucket, in the van! How crude am I? Haha!). I bet I get in trouble for writing that! Hehe! Twas made out of drift wood & was spectacular-any architect would be proud! & on the last day we some how got back to Auckland by lunchtime, so decided to go the the cinema. Saw 'Wild Hogs'-which is hilarious! Parents-you should all go watch it, its like a modern day 'Blazing Saddles'! We then realised that we had nothing to do (we'd both finished our books by this time), so bought anothe cinema ticket. We had a while to wait, so cooked dinner in the middle of the cinema car park.....the security guard was highly amused! Hehe!
Anyway-Ive written enough rubbish to bore you & Ive forgotten to where I was going-so ill leave you to it! Hope your all well.....we're going to sunbathe on our own secluded beach now! Ciao for now
