Rachie and Joey's Round The World Adventure!
Bula from Fiji! Rachie-elli here (my name in Fijian) :)
Well our 10 days in Fiji have been and gone! They went so quickly, but we had an awesome time! Stayed a couple of days in Nadi before setting off on our 'Awesome Adventure' trip to the Yasawa Islands! We basically jumped onto the Yasawa Flyer Boat and jumped off at the islands that took our fancy - sweet! We were picked up from the main boat by these tiny speed boats which were an adventure in themselves...we were never quite sure if we'd make it to the islands in one piece! I did manage one day to slip up quite nicely in front of a lot of people when entering one of the boats....i did stand up and say 'ta-da' as if I meant to do it but they didnt buy it (doh!) :) Anyways.....heres what we got up to!
Our first stop was Nacula Island - here we stayed at Nabua Lodge, as recommended by our friends Suzie and Allan - cheers guys! The island was really small and the accomodation was run by a local family (as was most!). The food was so lush, lots of fresh fruit and vegetables - the best food i've had in ages, my body was most grateful to be off the noodles! We stayed in this really cool Bure - basically a straw hut with our very own ensuite! The room was cool apart from one night we were joined by mice, which were very keen on getting into our cereal bars! After fumbling around in the dark well scared I was going to step on one of these things, my cries for help were heard by Jo and our roomy Elliot so they helped me find the light and the mice scarpered :) Funnily enough I didnt sleep that well after... :) The Island itself was beautiful with gorgeous beaches and clear blue sea! The pictures I took dont really do it justice, but you get the idea :)
Second stop we headed to Tavewa Island and stayed at Coral View. We were greeted on arrival by pretty much everyone from the island and welcomed individually, it was so sweet! They also managed to remember our names which was pretty impressive considering how many they had to remember! (I couldnt remember any of theirs!) This island was really cool, we spent both days in the sunshine and enjoyed a spot of afternoon tea and cake for $1! (Cant complain!). One night we had to make hats in order to get our dinner, so out of sheer desperation I grabbed a leaf off the floor, pinned it to my head and tried to pull off the ascot look! :) Funnily enough, I didnt enter myself for the hat competition later that night - especially as one guy managed to make a hat out of leaves that looked like the Statue of Liberty! God knows how long he spent on that but he must have been pretty desperate for dinner :)
From this Island we also took a trip to the Blue Lagoon (where the film was made! Surprise surprise I havent seen it!). The beach was absolutely stunning, we really did feel in paradise!
From Tavewa we were sung off the island (how sweet!) and headed off to our third isand Matacawalevu and stayed at Long Beach. Again we were back in a bure, no mice this time though :) I didnt really enjoy the boat trip to the island much - I was pretty sure we were speeding right towards some rocks so I ended up waving my arms around frantically and shouting at the driver that we were going to crash! (Just as he swiftly glided away from the rocks). Im beginning to realise Im not a very good passenger in both cars and boats :) We had a very relaxing time here again, and made friends with a local lady called Sula who made the best cakes! We made a visit to her several times and tried her coconut, chocolate and banana cake...basically it was eat as much as you like! Ive never eaten so much cake in my life :) We always looked forward to seeing her in the afternoon!
We also took a trip to a local village and school in Lautoka. After trekking our way through the forest, we came across the village and met a few of the locals. It was such a neat little village, and the post office was so small! The school visit was cool, we were greeted by all the kids and had a good look around the place! Slightly different to any school at home as you can imagine. The children even sung to us, which I have to admit did bring a tear to my eye (damn emotioms!) so I did make a wee exit for a moment :)
Fourth island stop was at Waya - Sunset Resort. We were warned by some friends that the dorms here were 'interesting'...it was like two giant beds on either side, they were so close together! Me and Jo took one look at how close we were going to be sleeping with our neighbours and decided we'd try and get an upgrade to a bure! I have to say, this was my first time at haggling and it was great fun! We managed to get ourselves the family sized bure all to ourselves, very cosy! Did cost us a little bit extra but I managed to haggle with the owners quite well until we agreed on a price, felt quite proud after hehe! It was really sweet too with its own little shower room and toilet (you were hidden by the smallest curtain in the world though, cant be shy when you're travelling thats for sure!).
Our time here was spent making the most of the sunshine, although we got slightly battered by the wind and I didnt quite realise how much I was burning my bottom at the time....looked quite rosy at the end of the day lets put it that way! Here we also tried Kava! Hmm....interesting! It does taste just like mud! We all sat in a circle, clapped our hands and downed our coconut sized portion...my lips and mouth went slightly numb very quickly! Me and Jo found one sitting enough so politely removed ourselves from the circle after that! hehe We just wanted to say that we'd tried it hehe!
One lunch time we were even joined by a whale! We looked out of our bure and saw a whale quite close up to the beach, was pretty amazing! (and not the sort of place we thought we'd see one thats for sure!).
After Waya, we headed back to the mainland for a couple of days in Nadi! Here we stayed at Nomads Skylodge which was pretty neat for a hostel! We had a really nice pool, nice ensuite room too but the place was so quiet! Tried to make the most of the sunshine before bracing ourselves for the coldness of New Zealand (quite looking forward to feeling snug again wrapped up warm!)
Well thats our 10 days in Fiji, its been fantastic - loved every minute of it! Was so nice to chill out on different beaches each day and make the most of the gorgeous weather. Was also really nice to have all our meals cooked for. On each island they had a drum which they banged to let you know your breaky/lunch/dinner was ready and on the table for you - perfect! Its a hard life travelling honest! :)
Really excited about New Zealand and the adventures we have ahead! Will be in touch soon with the latest update :)
