Surfer's Paradise & Byron Bay
Our twenty two hour bus journey was not fun to say the least. There was no seats together so I had to sit next to a boy who took up all my space, and squashed me against the window for most of the journey while he slept! But finally we got off the bus and arrived quite late in Surfers Paradise. We didn't have a clue where our hostel was, and after walking around lost for a while we found out that we had to get a bus to it because it was out of the centre - just what we needed another bus!
We only had one full day in Surfer's Paradise, so we took the hostel bus back into the centre the next morning. It reminded us a lot of Tenerife with it's high rise hotels and shops. As usual we spent the day shopping, and went to the beach. There was a surf school on the beach, so we sat and watched them learning for a while and decided that's it's something that we should definitely try to do.
After getting back to our hostel we cooked our tea, and we had Stag chilli with rice. It was the best meal ever! We definitely appreciate simple things since backpacking.
We were up early again the next day to get on another bus, but this time to Byron Bay. The bus wasn't too bad as it was only three hours long. We checked into our hostel, and there was a couple in our room who where from Bolton. It was really nice to hear some northern accents.
We had a walk around Byron, and quickly realised how much of a hippie town it is. There were loads of vintage shops, and everyone looked like they belonged in the 70's. We visited a bead shop and decided to buy some beads and make ourselves some bracelets so that we could wear them with our christmas clothes. There were so many bead choices it was so hard to choose, but I settled with gold ones and Jane chose red.
After packing our bags the next morning we spent the day by the pool before making our way to the bus station for our last bus in Australia, thankfully!! When we arrived it was chaos with four coaches and loads of people trying to get on them. We were then told that me and Jane were on separate coaches which was annoying, but what can you do. To pass the twelve hour journey I'd planned to watch The Santa Claus and Harry Potter on my laptop but neither of them would work! But I managed to get a few hours sleep, so the journey went quite quickly.
Although we couldn't spend much time in Byron or Surfer's as we had to get to Sydney for Christmas, they were both definitely worth the visit.
