Cairns & Airlie Beach
We were both excited to arrive in Cairns! We got to our hostel quite late, and couldnt believe how humid it still was. After our two flights we had an early night ready to explore Cairns the next day.
The next morning we had a walk around and decided as we were in Australia we wanted to get our pictures taken with a Koala bear. Rather than going all the way to the zoo, there was a casino not far from our hostel that strangely had an animal reserve on top of it. The Koala bear we held was called Harvey, he was so cute but really heavy!
That night it was ladies night at our hostel, so all girls got five free glasses of champagne. We only managed three glasses each as we had got there abit late, but it was probably a good thing as we had to be up at six to get on an eleven hour bus ride to Airlie Beach.
When we arrived in Airlie Beach we found out the first day trip we had planned had been cancelled so we spent the day sunbathing and had a look around the markets by the beach. For tea we went to the Down Under Bar and Jane had the $10 steak which we had heard so much about!
We were up really early again so we could board the Camira boat to travel to the Whitsunday islands. I was a bit nervous about being stuck on a boat for so long, but I didn't get too sea sick. The boat took us to a small island so we could snorkel. Being scared of fish and hating the sea I wasn't going to get in the water but I decided I had to be brave and I actually really enjoyed it. We used Jane's underwater camera to take some pictures, and after a while in the water we were excited to get back on the boat for an Aussie BBQ. After lunch the boat took us to Whitehaven Beach, which is the nicest beach I have ever seen!
The next morning we were up early again to go on a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef. The boat was huge and took us to a pontoon in the reef. We got our wet suits and flippers back on and spent a while snorkling. We expected to see more tropical fish, but I think you would have to scuba dive to see the best fish. After getting out of our snorking suits we the then had lunch and sunbathed for a while before going on a semi-submerged boat to see more of the reef. On the way back to Airlie Beach they gave us afternoon tea and it was nachos and fruit! All they seemed to do on the day trips is feed you, but we were made up as it meant that we didn't have to cook for a few days :)
We finally got off the boat about 6pm and waited around our hostel for a while, but it closed really early so we make our way to the bus stop where we sat and waited three hours for our bus. After getting on the bus about 12am we had a twenty two hour ride to our next stop in Surfers Paradise.
