Got up nice and early this morning to explore the island. Had our croissants for breakfast that we bought from the shop. We started out early so we had a full day. We had a mooch around the different travel shops to see the prices to Krabi, where we wanted to go next, they were all 1000 bhat each so we went to one that wasn't busy! We booked the boat from Koh Tao to mainland, then a coach to Krabi Town. We had to be at the pier for 6am on the 5th to set off at 6.30. We would arrive in Krabi at 1pm- nearly 7 hours travel! Wasn't looking forward to that, especially another boat!!
Once we were booked we decided to head north on the island and walk all the way up the west coast to as far as we could go. We walked from our town Mae Haad Bay to Sairee Beach. It was much quicker to get to the next town that we thought, which was lucky as we got to Sairee and Nath noticed that he hadn't brought his swimming shorts with him. We walked back to our room, then walked back to Sairee again. The path we walked along was just behind the beach so we could seeing parts of the sea. There wasn't much of a beach at this time as the tide was still in. There were plenty of shops and restaurants and bars along Sairee Beach- we nipped into a chemist to get Nath travel sickness tablets for the next boat journey!!
We walked for a couple of hours up to as far as the road would take us to a viewpoint near the top of the island that looked out over towards Koh Naang Yuan Island (the island that has a strip of beach joining one part of the island to the other). Along the way we decided to cut in and see the beach as it looked so beautiful and green. We walked along the beach to end and ended up in a private resort- so had to go back again!
You could go on boat trips to the island but we decided not to. We were glad when we eventually got to the viewpoint that we did that instead. Again, we were the only people on the island that were waking anywhere!! Up and down these steep hills in about 28 degree heat!
At the viewpoint we got a brilliant view and it was very sunny and clear, which made the view nicer! The island was stunning! The viewpoint had a bar overlooking so we got a beer and took in the beautiful views. We had seen so many viewpoints on our trip already but every one of them were still breathtaking! It was only half 12 and it felt like we had done the whole island in a couple of hours! We did well to walk from our resort to the top in a couple of hours! We sat enjoying the view before walking right back to Sairee Beach.
We cut into the beach when we could- Sairee Beach was the main beach on the island- the rest were little bays with little beaches or private resorts- so the beach was busy! We walked until we found a spot we could squeeze in and set up there for the rest of the day.
It was so warm so we kept getting in and out of the sea. It was nothing like the beach at Haad Rin as it was so calm. The water was shallow for ages, up to the point where your not suppose to pass because of the boats. The beach was lined with long tail boats and we kept standing on or tripping over the anchors and ropes attached to them!
The water was lovely though, it was so clear, a green/blue colour and it was pretty warm too. It looked like paradise pictures. We stayed at the beach for a couple of hours and went to the 7/11 up the road for some lunch and both got a microwave meal. They were surprisingly really nice!! Mine was really spicy but it was still yummy!! We didn't know why we hadn't thought of getting these meals before! They were only between 30-50 bhat (60p-£1!).
Once it got cooler as the sun was on its way down, we decided to head back to our room. Back at Mae Haad we got a Nutella pancake from a street vender, which was delicious!!
We had decided that we wanted to stay on the island for another day but our reception never seemed to be open. I swear they were running some other dodgy business! When we got back, it was actually open though so we booked and paid for another night at Nirvana Guesthouse.
After getting showered and ready we headed back out to a restaurant at the Pier. We started heading up to Sairee Beach as there seemed to be some nice restaurants up there, but it was longer than we realised during the day and wasn't very well lit so we turned back and went to restaurant near our pier.
The Moonlight restaurant overlooked the water and looked like a nice BBQ restaurant. It was quite busy, but the staff didn't seem to deal with it very well and it took ages to get served. Once we got drinks we were okay though! We both ordered cocktails which was a lovely change from beers!! They were strong too! For dinner I ordered BBQ beef with mushroom sauce and potatoes and salad. Nath got cordon bleu with mushroom sauce, salad and potatoes- we ordered different potatoes but they both looked the same! We also ordered cheesy garlic bread to share- such a treat for us! This was our treat night to celebrate! The food was amazing! Tasted so nice to try something other rice or noodles! Nath got another cocktail and I got a beer- which they obviously thought was the other way around! Ha!
Dinner knocked it out of us and we were paggered again! The mix of the very early morning, the heat and all the walking we had been doing every single day just knocked it out of us, so on a night we were just exhausted! We preferred it this way than staying up all night though as we were up no later than 7.30 every morning to explore! Bed it was for us to be up again early the next day!
