We were up nice and early this morning after a good sleep- 6.30am start! We headed out through Baan Tai to find breakfast and stopped at a little random shack that kind of looked like someone's garden with a sort of kitchen in it. Nath ordered fried eggs with toast and tea and I ordered scrambled eggs with toast and tea- the tea definitely wasn't tea though! My scrambled egg was lovely but Nath wasn't keen on his!
We then walked for miles and went to a viewing point called Wat Khao Tam, where there was a Buddhist monastery (but we didn't see any monks) and there was a rock (viewing point) at the top, which had views overlooking Koh Pha Ngan, which were really pretty. After a long hike back down we walked some more and then walked some more, and then a little bit more (in the meantime stopping for a nice thai beer- me Chang beer, Nath Singha beer)! And little did I know at that time but that was me then hooked on Chang beer- well just beer in general! I had never really drank beer up until this point!
We kept walking into Tong Sala town and had a mooch around- we even found a tesco!!! What a joke! We had some lunch in an open outdoor market/food court- I had Pad Thai and Nath had sweet and sour chicken with rice- they were both amazing- along with some more beer!
We then started on a walk to Phaeng Waterfall and Donesila Viewpoint and after walking for about 3 miles we decided to flag a taxi for the little remainder. We literally couldn't walk anymore in the heat and my feet were blistered everywhere! I didn't think I would be walking the length of the island when I set off this morning! I can't believe how far we actually walked. The waterfall was in Than Sadet National park. It was a fair hike to the waterfall- there were around 3 on the way through the woods, with the last waterfall being the best. We both got in for a paddle and some photos and then headed to the viewpoint in the park and saw views over all of Koh Pha Ngnan towards Tong Sala- we couldn't believe how far we had come- and how much we had sweated! It was such a steep hike through the wood trying to hold onto trees to make it to the top! A crazy start for a first full day exploring.
The way back down went quicker and we then decided to attempt to walk back to Tong Sala Pier, which didn't take as long as we expected (I was thinking a couple of days!) but it did take a mighty long time. Plus my feet were covered in blisters but we managed it and walked all the way back- at least 4 miles. To reward ourselves we got some beers from the shop and sat on the beach taking in the beautiful views. It looked like what you see on pictures of Thailand with the lovely beaches and sunsets and long tail boats tied up in the sea. We walked along the beach towards Baan Tai, but didn't get very far before the tide came in! We had our beers whilst we walked and eventually found a restaurant in Baan Tai after walking for about an hour! I had mushroom and chicken stir fry and Nath had vegetable and pork stir fry- they both weren't overly nice and mine was very hot!! We kept walking for miles after, went to a 7/11 shop, bought some beer and nibbles and headed back to the room.
The food here is lovely though to be fair and we seemed to have adjusted well.l very quickly. I can't believe I'm drinking beer all the time. Chang beer which I have is 6% and goes straight to my head! And Nath drinks Singah beer which is 5%. We are loving Koh Pha Ngan so far! We seem to have done so much in the day it's unreal. We maybe should have got a scooter and saved our legs- literally nearly every person on the island rides a scooter as does every tourist that comes here! We have seen dogs on the back of scooters, little babies and children on them, 4 people on one scooter! Madness! And we have just walked everywhere! The bonus was that we got to take in the culture of the island walking around and see more on foot than we would have on a scooter. Plus it seemed a little scary to ride a scooter. You hear all sorts of horror stories! Maybe another time..
Well that's our first full day done. We are up nice and early tomorrow to go on a boat trip to Ang Tong National Park. We are really looking forward to that, it looks fab!
