14th-19th March
We stayed in Auckland for 5 nights in a hostel just up the hill from the city centre. They city was very hilly! We got some right exercise! The hostel was okay. Our room was a little box with bunk beds. There was a shared shower and toilet room but there were more than enough of them for the whole hostel. There was a shared kitchen too. Most people at the hostel were pretty weird and spent most of their time in the hostel on their phones or laptops! Looked like a great travelling experience!
Auckland is a really lovely city. It reminded me of Manchester but with better views and a harbour. There were volcanic hills everywhere around the city and surrounding districts. We climbed two of them and they both had 360 views of auckland which were amazing!
We spent one of the days mooching and taking in the city and the harbour. Auckland had all sorts going on- an Arts festival, the Volvo Ocean race, the cricket World Cup and paddys day. The city always seemed to be on the go. On the Sunday there was the St. Patricks parade through town. Everybody was out wearing green and celebrating. Afterwards there was music and Irish dancers at an Irish bar at the harbour.
The Tuesday was St. Patricks day so we spent the day at the same Irish bar at the harbour. They had a live Irish band on and Irish dancers. It was $20 in but it was worth it. There was a massive gazebo outside and you got a free massive burger with your ticket. We were there from about 2pm and didn't get in until 1.30am the next morning! It was a long session but had such a great day!! I had a little boogie with an old Scottish man too! We ended up spending over £200 but it really was worth it for our last blow out! It was the best St. Patricks day so far and everybody was so friendly! I think I could call NZ home! We have both fell in love already!
On the last night we went to the star dome and planetarium for a show. There was a little museum to walk around first and then we went and saw the planetarium show about the nights sky at this time of year and what stars could be seen. It was pretty interesting. They had a ginormous telescope there that came out of the roof door but it was too cloudy so we weren't able to use it, which we were majorly gutted about it! That was going to be one of the best bits!!
The last day we just got up and sorted and had a taxi ordered to bring us for our campervan to start our adventure!!
