Greetings from Chiang Mai. I am so exhausted.
Much has happened since I last had the opportunity to update this thing. Here's a summary...
Thursday: After I finished my net time on thursday I had my Intrepid trip meeting. Met up with some of the people from my trip (Hayley, Noel. Craig and Rong), and went out for some drinks/exploring on the Khao San Road with Craig. Got slightly drunk on 80baht cocktails at a mobile street bar.
Friday: Was surprisingly unhungover. Went with Craig to the Grand Palace where we took lots of photos and made fun of the other tourists. Ooops. Practically melted exploring the local markets as it was so so hot. Back at the hotel to meet up with the group at 4pm, and met our new members, Jasmin and Rebecca. Got to know the new girls a bit in the taxi on the way to the train station and then over coffee.
The night train was hellish. The first part was good (apart from the toilets), as the food was good and we were all having fun chatting and playing card games etc. Once the beds came down and we had to go to bed however, it was horrible. The lights were on bright all night and the train was rocking like crazy. I think I maybe got 3-4 hours (broken) sleep total. Ugh. And we had to all sleep in our clothes with our money belts on so we were all quite delightful once we got up.
We got to Chiang Mai this morning at about 8:30am and checked into our new hotel to dump bags, have showers and eat breakfast. I had been hoping to do a cookery course whilst I was here but I felt so tired that I wasn't sure I was up to it. So the six of us piled into a taxibus and went to the zoo! Lots of fun despite some slightly questionable conditions at times and lots of walking in the heat. I have a lot of photos that I will upload as soon as I find a computer that will let me plug things in. I also have an amazing video of us feeding giraffes, which you will hopefully get to see soon.
This afternoon Jasmin and I went shopping so I could buy a sarong and ended up at a local mall. It had loads of American places in, including Sizzler and Dairy Queen! The taxibus driver got us totally lost on the way back, but we made it to the hotel in one piece so I guess it's all part of the adventure.
Off for dinner in a few minutes and then tomorrow morning we start on our hilltribe trek. The trek is three days long so I won't be back here until tuesday. Hope everyone is well and I'll be back on when I can.
