So thought it was about time i started recording some of the things that im up to. Left the awesome george best belfast city airport on thursday 1st October 2009. I then flew to london heathrow and after an 8 hour wait finally borded a cathay pacific plane for hong kong. The flight was 12 hours and although overnight i found it difficult to sleep. Hong kong looked beautiful and i would have loved to spend some time there but an hour later i was on another plane bound for sydney. This was meant to take 9 hours but due to wind we were diverted to brisbane and ended up spending another 12 hours on the plane. By this stage i had been travelling for around 36 hours. Due to swine flu scares passengers were meant to inform a member of staff if they felt unwell. By this stage i was white as a sheet and felt close to death but somehow i managed to get myself and my bags through the rigourous australian customs.
I arrived in coogee beach surfside hostel on saturday the 3rd and slept all day. and all night and all day only emerging to go out for dinner on the sunday night. I met ellen, zoe steph and craig and the canadians -pat and jason.
The next day oz intro began and i met the rest of the group. We went to the city centre and saw the opera house, finally i felt like i was really on the other side of the world! We then went jet boating in sydney harbour and got asolutely soaked!! That night we went for dinner at fiveos below the hostel. When we came back we fell asleep- at 6pm! at around 9 i awoke to hear the canadians practicing their busking skills with their guitar! Then me ellen pat and jason learnt the hard way that it is a lonnnng walk to the supermarket in randwick. And that supermarkets in oz are not 24 hour!
The next day we went on the ferry across the harbour to sydney aquarium, where i saw a finding nemo fish! After lunch we got our tax file numbers, medicare cards and bank accounts set up. Sorted! That night we went on the party bus to the gaff- an infamous british packpacker bar in the city.'There are no stranger here only friends you have not yet met'- and also a free meal!
Wednesday was a horribly early start. We drove for about an hour and a half to a beach where surf dude from mojo surf gave us a lesson. It was very cold and windy and i had issues carrying my board. Good fun though! Thursday was supposed to be a bbq on bondi beach but due to the wind (wasnt i supposed to be in bondi not ballycastle?) we went to the zoo instead.
On friday morning we awoke at half 6 to get the bus to the blue mountains. I was beginning to learn the hard way that in this country early starts are not unusual. After a quick panic attack on the bus when i thought id left my camera back when we stopped for breakfast (nothing new there) i admired the breathtaking veiws. This was no small mountain range- they are so vast that there are many towns and motorways along with 100s of miles of untouched landscape. We went on a longgg hike- the highlight being the backwards train up one mountain to the cafe at the top! The welsh guy Morgan was terrified of heights but even he found the experience enjoyable!!
Saturday was along lazy day followed by the fancy dress pub crawl at night. Our group was a mixture of aboriginal themed and i love coogee tshirts! The party bus was great fun even if it did leave without most of us at the end!! On sunday evening we ended the week with dinner in the rotating restaurtant up sydney tower!
