Arrived at Siem Reap 3 hours later than planned. The airport here is lovely, very different from most and very small. It was a surprise to us when we spotted our free hotel pick up that he was in a tuk tuk. Always an experience, we ventured in near darkness to our hotel.
Now it would be fair to say that although the flight was only 45 mins from Bangkok to Siem Reap, the difference in environments is huge. The roads are beaten up, dusty and very busy. It's just all so ramshackled, except for the very beautiful, big hotels. We love it here already. The staff greeted us with gusto when we arrived. We were first seated then asked to fill in a few forms whilst we were questioned about where we came from, where we had flown in from etc. we were then given a welcome drink with snacks which included dried banana, peanuts in honey and jack fruit and rice wrapped in banana leaf, plus a couple of cool towels. On top of this we were booked in for a free 1 hour Khymer massage, a free picnic and a free 3 course traditional Khymer lunch. The hotel is lovely and a great location. Just 5 minutes walk to the infamous 'Pub Street' but fairly quiet.
The staff were beyond themselves when we asked if they could teach us some Cambodian and 3 of them gathered round us to help!
We visited a bar I had read about on Tripadvisor, which was fabulous, called Miss Wong cocktail bar. We had some great cocktails including a selection of very good martini's. The bloody Mary made using Kampot pepper is being saved for Jon and Scott's arrival. We had a few dim sum in the bar and then decided to call it a night. Finally made contact with our parents tonight too so they all know we haven't been eaten by cannibals!
