Had an interesting 4 hour bus journey from Cameron Highlands to Lumut which involved a great deal of pit-in-face action from locals. As you can imagine this was extremely pleasant to say the least. Malaysian buses have been brilliant but this particular journey let the team down! It was rammed and the air-con didn't work. Although there were no seats left the driver insisted on letting more people on board which is how I came to have a number of pits in my face! So I was pretty glad to reach Lumut where a ferry takes you across to the island of Pangkor. It is on the West side of the Peninsular and the East side is known for stunning islands, but because of the recent weather no ferries have been taking passengers across from the mainland and as I don't have a great deal of time here I decided on Pangkor.
I arrived on the first day of Malaysian school holidays and the place was packed with Malaysian holiday makers. I had a wonderful first morning just topping up my tan on the beach but after the third Malaysian group of teenagers asked if they could take a photo of me I thought it best to put some clothes on over my bikini as there were very few other Westeners there and a whole load of Muslims FULLY clothed on the beach. I felt like a nob! I walked to a quieter part of the beach but had gained a following of stray dogs that were really quite annoying! I picked a spot to sunbathe in anyway surrounded by about 5 of the dogs, just reading my book when a monkey jumped out of the surrounding trees and went rummaging through my bag! I tried to shoo it away but it lashed out at me and then took my sunglasses out of my bag and ran off with them! Then, all 5 of the dogs around me came to my rescue and had a full on fight with the monkey, so it dropped my sunglasses and I got them back!
My resort was pretty cool had the dorm to myself and the second evening I was there, who should walk in? Bella and Sarah I met in the Cameron Highlands. On the last night we had a BBQ at the resort which was just seafood. I'm not fussy about food but when it comes on a plate, head and all, I get slightly squeemish. But I dealt with it and ate my way through a fish, 2 crabs, 4 king prawns (the worst to disect) and some baby squid. I'd never had squid before and I'm never having it again. I'm sure you are meant to remove the jelly insides of it before cooking but just my luck the second one I tried had some gooey jelly substance which exploded into my mouth. It's making me gag just thinking about it, but you get the picture.
