Rachel in Ecuador
Hello all! On Friday I went into Tena to do my washing - I had 6kilos of it! It was also absolutely boiling. I keep forgetting I'm nearly on the equator! The weather here is very hot and humid and then it rains. And when it rains it really rains!!! One day last week we had 45cm of it!!! It sounded like I was living under a waterfall the sound of it hitting the roof above me! It's really incredible. The weather also means that stuff is a lot bigger here - not only the plants but the insects too. I won't be freaking out anymore at home over a little spider now that I've sen how big they could be!Everything's so alive here. You notice it a lot more than at home. Everything needs everything else to grow. For example the leaves on the ground rot and help the trees grow, which provide food and shelter for insects and small animals etc.
Yesterday we took a bus to Puerto Misahualli and then had to walk about 3 miles to get to the actual town of Misahualli. It reminded me of Adventureland at Disney but for real!!! They have monkeys living in that town that just wander about and can apparantely be very cheeky - they have been known to take money from people!!! Then last night we went into Tena to a bar and a nightclub. The town was buzzing. There was some kind of sports match on and there were people everywhere. The atmosphere was nothing like I've seen before! The bar had palm leaves for its roof and even had a couple of swings in it! I didn't take my camera though cos I didn't want to risk it getting stolen. Anyways, that's about all for now. Rachel xxx
