Rachel in Ecuador
Hi there! Just got electricity back today after a day and a half without it or phone line. It's been a bit weird here, felt very homesick yesterday but i'm getting into it more now. I've moved cabins so now I'm sharing with an Ecuadorian girl, which I'm really pleased about. She's nice and I get to speak a lot of Spanish. Yesterday the work was really hard and my legs are sooooo sore today! We had to move loads of gravel about. Very boring. But it was hot work so it made my first cold shower a bit more pleasant!!! I just showered really quickly and held my breath. You wouldn't believe the noises here at night time. It's really incredible, all the bugs and frogs etc. It goes dark at about 6:40 so at dinner time we have to take our torches cos you can't see anything otherwise! Going to the toilet in the middle of the night is quite an experience.
Today I was doing some gardening and weeding, which was much nicer. The shaman gave me some cinammon leaves to eat too. Tomorrow we are going for a hike into the forest to see what we can see and on Sunday a local woman comes to teach us local handicrafts. The weather is hot and humid but very cold at night time. I have a massive mosquito net but I've still been bitten on my legs!!! The food's also been quite good here. Everyone takes a turn helping out the cooks in the kitchen. We have to do the pot washing and chopping etc but I've not had to do that yet. Apparantely it's really boring. Last night there was a black and red snake in the kitchen that was pretty cool and today in the botanical garden I saw a baby Boa, got a photo of it. Anyways, all is going good & there's a bar down the road!! Miss you all lots. Rachel xxx
