Even though the weather was still horrid we headed to Belgrave to board the Puffing Billy Steam train. Before we got there we stopped to wave at passengers on an earlier train. We were pleased to see that most of them waved back. The track runs for 8.25miles to Lakeside and takes about an hour each way. It runs through eucalypt forests, fern gullies and pretty little stations. As the train starts from Belgrave it crosses river and road on a very picturesque trestle bridge, which is just under 100m long. The weather on the way to Lakeside was nice and it looked like there would be no rain. We were wrong. As we waited in Lakeside for our return train there was thunder and hail! We were shocked to see hail in Australia. It continued to rain for the whole journey back and was very cold.
On the way to our campsite we listened to the AFL match on the radio and Geelong won. It was very close from what we could tell.
Over the next few days we took refuge from the rain and stayed at a nice campsite a bit higher up in the forest. Where we saw a Koala bear in a eucalyptus tree. So only wombats to go.
