So i wrote this post yesterday however i forgot to post it! So here its is:
Today Chris and I went into Zurich! Such a cool city though it is super expensive!! We arrived in the Zurich central station which is having a mini Oktoberfest! As we arrived early we went for a walk up a very steep hill to get to the ETH which is a fancy science university in Zurich which has some lovely buildings and Chris thinks its amazing! We pretended to be university students and went into the coffee shop filled with students to get a coffee for Chris and a rivella for me (its a type of fizzy drink- I can't describe what it tastes like- it tastes like rivella and its very refreshing!) and we got delicious mandelbrezel from their bakery section! Yum yum! Once our hungry spot had been filled we went off to the national museum back down the hill- on the way we popped into a church which had a lovely green spire and inside was really simple with white ornaments all over the ceiling! It's amazing to see the difference between Swedish, Spanish and Swiss churches.
The national museum looks like a fairy tale Swiss castle! It's soo lovely with spires, flowers and lovely patchy roofs! Inside they were having a postmodernism exhibition which was very bright, luminous colours, 80's and a bit odd at times! They had a mickey mouse tea set on display as well as a lady liberty on fire! There was also a Kapitol exhibition on which was displaying things about the beginnings of the europe economy's looking particularly at Amsterdam and Venice! It was very interesting and there were lots of videos we could sit and watch!
Then it was time to hunt down some food so we went off to the bahnhofstrasse which is a street in Zurich with lots of shops. Unfortunately most of them you can't go into because they are SOOO expensive! So we caught the tram down to Zurich lake and then walked up the street looking for food! We found a bretzel stand and got some salty bretzels to munch on.
After some none existent shopping on bahnhofstrasse we wandered into the small streets in its surrounds window shopping and church spotting! We wandered into St Augustines, around Fraumunster(it was closed) St. Peter's cathedral and into Grossmunster. Each was lovely and rather white. They all have similar characteristics in the simplicity sometimes you'd think that something built into 853( Grossmunster) would be more impressive or perhaps I got so used to most churches in Sweden and Spain being extravagant and gold.
In Grossmunster we were not allowed to take pictures however we did sneak a few in. The stain glass windows were made using thin slices of those colourful rocks. It was really pretty! There was also a crypt chapel which had a statue of Charlemagne who built the original church. The crypt was really cool as it echoed beautifully as we whistled "over the rainbow" while having a sit (my feet hurt
