Today was Chris and my first day in Switzerland and we spent it in and around Luzern. We caught an early train into Luzern and watched the countryside awaken through the mist and grey clouds on our journey in. this was the first time we were really experiencing swiss countryside which is a mangle of rural an urban all together, there are cows and sheep sporadically spread throughout the urban and rural areas.
From Luzern we caught a huge ferry across the Luzern lake to Weggis a small village on the lake at the bottom of one of the mountains. We wandered through Weggis up to the cable car which would take us nearly to the top of the mountain at Kaltbad. From this point we were planning on catching the funicular up to the top of the mountain however as a result of repair work happening on the rail we decided to walk up the mountain To Staffelhöhe. The tops of the mountains were stunning from this view point and we wandered around the grass slopes while sheep munched on the grass and their bells tinkled away!
After the mountain we had time to wander about Weggis again before hopping back on the ferry to return to Luzern. While in Weggis we sat on the edge of lake Luzern and munched on bratwurst and mustard! Yummy!! And then wandered around the nearby church which was filled with lovely flowers. All of the Swiss houses seem to be covered in in flowers, hanging from windows sills, balconies and pretty much everywhere else too! They were so pretty!
Once back in Luzern we located the pretty bridge that I wanted to walk on! It too was covered in flowers and had swans and ducks swimming all over underneath the bridge. This bridge is called chapel bridge and has painting placed under all of the trusses holding up the roof! Some of the painting ate missing due to a fire but most of the original bridge and some paintings are still intact. We wandered if into the shopping streets that were close to Chapel bridge and explored the buildings, watch, chocolate and pastry stores.
We also discovered the Luzern history museum an as we had some time we went in, luckily out Swiss passes co r&r museums too and this was one of them! It was filled with paintings, suits of armour, swords, clothing, a guillotine, and other strange and exciting finds.
Now I am sitting on the train watching the Swiss countryside slide pass while Chris snoozes on the chair next to me!
