We left Airlie Beach to head for Hervey Bay to do the Fraser Island tour. You may be wondering why I am going back down the East Coast as I have already done the East Coast but the girls I am with have not done the East Coast yet and also we all want to head back to Sydney for Xmas as it seems to be the place to be, not to mention that it is getting far too hot up north.
The bus journey to Hervey Bay was 12 hours so we stopped off at Mackay for a few hours and camped in Pizza Hut until our next bus arrived.
We finally arrived in Hervey Bay at 7am the next morning and checked into Kookaburras Hostel for a day before we go to Fraser. Paul and Mar (who we met on the Whitsundays) came to meet us as they also wanted to do the Fraser Island tour and they also brought Kenny from Scotland who was a really nice guy.
We set off for the Fraser Island tour the next day. It consisted of a group of 11 people who were given a Safari Jeep (equipped with food and camping gear and alcohol of course) and an itinery for 3 days and we were basically left to our own device which was excellent. On the first day we had a walk through the rainforest to Basin Lake which was beautiful - pure white sand and clear blue water, totally breath taking. We then had to walk back to our jeep and basically set up camp for that night. We found our campsite, got the tents up, made a fire and basically got on the piss, we didn't even have time to eat which was great as it meant we would have more food for the next day. The night consisted of lots of drinking games, face paints, toasting marshmallows on the fire and basically getting totally pissed.
On day two we had a drive along the beach and had to clean ourselves up in Ellie Creek (the un-fun part of camping). We then drove to a Shipwreck which was just on the side of the beach then along to Indian Heads which is the look out point of Fraser Island, totally amazing view. We basically spent the rest of the day chilling on the beach then back to find a camping area and more alcohol of course.
On day three we packed up our camping gear and headed towards Lake Mackenzie which is the most awesome lake I have ever seen in my life - the sand was so white we thought it was snow and the water was so clear you could actually drink it. We then headed back for our ferry and went back to Hervey Bay for another night.
