Awoke to a beautiful day in the mountains. Had breakfast in the dining room overlooking the highest mountains in S.E. Asia. Breakfast was a buffet with all sorts of amazing things to try (which, sadly for our ever increasing waistlines, we did) Tried to buy a travel SIM for Lisa's phone but the shop we went to didn't seem to have any. (even though they had a sign outside advertising the product!) Eventually, the kind hotel concierge staff went out and came back with one, installed it in the phone and set it up. Great service! Our H'Mong guide came at 9:00 and took Lisa, I and an Indian girl on the 'trek' to Cat Cat village. Got a bit held up along the way when we came to a sports shop and the girls were checking out all the 'GoreTex" gear at amazingly low prices! (We are very close to the Chinese border here!) On down the hill to Cat Cat and a cultural show with dancing and flute type instrument playing. Came back by taxi to Sapa then to lunch at the Indigo Restaurant. Lovely. Decided to go up on the newly opened cable car to Fansipan Peak. This cable car constructon is enormous with people still constructing the buildings. This cable car is the world's longest and highest. The view was amazing and there were thousands of people up there. The road leading to it was incredibly bad! Huge pot holes filled with water, yet an enormous terminal building all marble and granite, beautifully built although when you look closely, a little lacking in finish quality. There was a long walk up to the summit and given the altitude (3143M) a noticable lack of oxygen. The summit area was swarming with people, mainly chinese, and it was hard to actually get to the summit itself! Back to Sapa in time for happy hour, again, the Wallers were the sole participants! Out to the Sapa Village Restaurant for dinner and back to bed
