Well, everyone, Fiji has gone by in a flash and we our now in NEW ZEALAND. Probably the place i have most been looking forward to. The weather is fantastic. Sunshine, no rain, low humidity and cool nights. We are staying in a great hostel, which has duvets. We havent had duvets anywhere on our trip yet, so had the best nights sleep ever last night. Our hostel is also a converted Jail, which worried Tom and Lee, who are thinking i may break out into another nightmare. Luckily it hasnt happened.....yet. So, we are basically staying in prison cells, lol. It still has the solitary confinement area, where they put the drunken backpackers now.
So...... back to Fiji. After a couple of nights staying on the main land, we all headed out to the islands. The day we left we had never seen rain like it. Everything got absolutely drenched in Fijian tropical rain. We took a 2 hour boat trip out to the island of Waya Leilei. Unfortunately the jetlag was catching up with Becky, plus the rain which wasnt helping her recover, so Tom and Becky decided to go back to the main land to a more luxurious hotel. i didnt see Becky for the rest of the time in Fiji but Tom has told me they had a fantastic time together and even headed back out to the islands. So all has ended well, whcih is great. Meanwhile, me and Leeroy stayed on the islands and had some great fun as well. Waya Lei lei was a fairly quite island so we ended up going to the beach doing some laddish things. These included hunting crabs, breaking open coconuts, climbing rocks and building a mini God, which we named Wilson 2. He even had a heart made of grapefruit, a coconut helmut, seaweed hair and a sword twig. Later on....a dog ate him. Wilson is once again gone. The place we stayed in was a little freaky. I came back to an army of ants on my bed, but i managed to dry my socks out using a candle, our only light source.
The next day, after doing some more laddish things, including throwing spears and trying to do flips off a sand bank, we decided to head to beachcomber island. This is the main party island in Fiji. You can walk around the whole island in five minutes and we stayed in a dorm of over hundred people. I had bed number 70, thats how crazy it is. The three days we spent here were party fuelled. You get to know everyone there because the island is so small and everyone goes to the bar after dinner. Had so a good laugh. The buffet dinners which were also included were top notch. Mexicans and chinese dinners were two of the dinner menus we had.
On the day we left Beachcomber island, me and Leeroy decided to do a sailing trip to some of the islands. After about a dozen boats to get to the sailing boat, we headed to Mato island (or something similar sounding) and went to a Fijian ceremony, where you get to drink Carva. It looks like mud water but makes you laugh loads. The night before i had had about 15 cup fulls of the stuff and still had the taste of plant in my mouth, so i passed this time. Leeroy only had one cup full that night because it made him heave in his mouth, so he also passed. The chief was a crazy old fijian with no teeth who laughed at everything and anything. I liked him immediately. So.. after the cereomny, we headed to Modriki. This was the main reason i did the sailing trip because it is the island where they filmed castaway. the island is absolutely fantastic. We jumped off the boat and snorkelled to the island. The reef was some of the best i have seen anywhere. Our main aim while we were there was to find the cave that Tom Hanks sleeps in, with Wilson. After searching one area of the island , we came back to the beach and started snorkelling around the island. The boat crew told us not to go past a certain point, but our will was too strong to find the cave. We had to be fast otherwise the boat would see us and pick us up before we made it out of sight. Luckily we made it. 2 other blokes who were swimming a little way behind us were pulled back. Yeeeees, the mission had begun. We were snorkelling through some of the best reef i have seen, in search of this cave. Eventually, we found another very small beach where we decided it was best to walk from as the waves were crashing on the rocks. The walk from here was horrendous, loads of slippery, sharp rocks and loads of big crabs running all over the place. This did not stop the mission. Being a fan of castaway i was a little ahead of Leeroy because of the excitement. And then it happened....I rounded a corner, and there it was........the cave. Excitedly, i ran inside, shouting for Wilson. Wilson, W W Wilson i shouted. He didnt answer, but i could feel his presence. A great moment in my Figji experience. The mission was complete, but the swim back was a toughy. We were the last ones back on the sailboat, they almost left without us. Didnt matter. We were the only ones in the group to find the Wilson cave and that was the best part of it.
