One fun thing to do in Kuwait is 4x4ing. Here is a video of the latest trip. There is a bit of terrain north of the city an hour or so called 'Mutla Ridge'. It is about 70m above sea level(!) but still offers some fun driving up and down the little tracks about the place. There is a lot of fun you can have at the foot of the ridge just driving in the sand and fanging up the slopes to see how far you can get before it digs in. Another thing you can do is drive along the top, being careful not to fall over the edge which can come up rather quickly. There are a lot of small steep hills along the top as well which are fun to crawl up in low range 4WD. It's amazing what these vehicles can do and I've only really begun to learn. I've developed a bit of a route that I take people on, much of which I learnt from a friend. I was initially very afraid of the steep, sandy descents - especially how the vehicle just seemed to make its own way down through the sand and you'd just have to let the car drift in a general direction, steering wheel spinning of its own accord to some extent as the tires went through the sand.
For those with a bit of courage/stupidity you can also head west out past Ali Al Salem aiforce base on the 70 and basically pick a straight line and drive. It's all flat hard sandy desert so you can just go wherever you please. There are some tracks which the Bedouin and oil workers have used but really the sand is so hard you don't need to take them. There is a risk of unexploded bombs out there though so don't take this as encouragement to check it out, that's entirely your responsibility:-) If you do happen to find yourself out there though, probably best to stick to the tracks. When I went with a mate once we happened upon a collection of sand dunes, perhaps a couple of kilometres square. Some were highish but nothing like what you'd see in the UAE. You wouldn't want to drive on them as they're too soft, but at least it's a nice thing to see when you're driving across the otherwise featureless desert with an antenna tower every 5km or so and maybe a couple of slowly moving camels.
It's a whole other side to Kuwait that a lot of people miss sitting at Shakeshack in Avenues Mall. I'm very grateful to a couple of friends I have here for encouraging me to get out and it's nice now to pass on the same knowledge and skills to others.
