My impression of Hong Kong - busy, built up and expensive…….
We landed at 10h30pm, took over 1one and a half hours to exit the massive airport and then caught the most expensive cab ride of our lives to the smallest hotel room of our lives.
Our "room" (read broom closet) was on the 15th floor of a high rise building and if you don't believe the broom closet quip, check out these dimensions - 2.5m x 2m. (See the pics to believe it). The mattress of our bed ran from wall to wall and when I lay down on it, I was literally lying with my head and toes touching the walls - that was the width of the room. Our bathroom in our 47 square metre flat in London was about half a metre smaller than the entire room - seriously. And all of that for the princely sum of $55 US - no meals included! We had to slide our backpacks under the bed in order to have a few inches spare so that we could climb into and out of bed, as well as negotiate a way to the bathroom. We finally got to bed at about 1am that morning.
As we didn't have much time to our disposal and as it was drizzling, we spent the next morning exploring the city blocks around our hotel. I must admit that the designer shops here put those in London to shame, they are huge and all of the big names were present - Dior, Chanel, Miu Miu, Louis Vuiton etc. I had to physically restrain Jo and check that my credit cards were all accounted for in my wallet.
Hong Kong is a very dynamic city and I would've liked to have had more time to explore, especially to go up one of the hills to get a better view of the city, but we had to leave at 1pm to catch our flight to Fiji at 4pm.
We arrived at the airport with what we thought were 2 hours to spare, only to discover that the flight was delayed by 5 hours, which meant that not only did we lose more than half a day in Fiji, but we could have also spent that time exploring more of Hong Kong.
Oh well…….
