Jo and I were up pretty early and after a rushed breakfast, we boarded what was to be our final bus trip, to Phnom Penh - the capital of Cambodia.
After a five and a half hour journey (probably our best bus trip to date), we arrived in Phnom Penh, dumped our backpacks at our guesthouse - the Mad Monkey - and went off to see S21.
For those of you who don't know your Cambodian history - Security Prison 21, or 'S21' is the prison where victims of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime were interred, interrogated, tortured and executed. Of the approximately 17000 people who were sent there between 1975 and 1979, only 7 survived. It's a very sombre place and you get the chance to see some of the minute cells that the inmates were kept in, implements of torture and photographs of former inmates. There are also some skulls on display, each displaying evidence of how the victim was killed i.e. shot or bludgeoned to death.
After that, Jo and I needed something a bit more light hearted to raise our spirits and caught a tuk-tuk to the night market, which is - as the name implies - a large fresh food market that stays open until very late, catering predominantly to the locals. Unfortunately Jo witnessed the demise of a squawking duck at the hands of an axe wielding woman and that was the end of the market tour.
Later we came across a large outdoor square that had been covered with mats and surrounded by stalls selling all sorts of locally made food. The idea was to purchase whatever took your fancy and then to sit down on a mat and wait for the food to be brought to you. We ended up having supper there, before taking a two hour leisurely stroll back to our guesthouse.
The next day we took in the sights and sounds of the very large central market (where we both ended up succumbing to temptation and buying a couple of imitation watches). After that we visited the Royal Palace (where the King of Cambodia still lives) and the Silver Pagoda (with a gold plated Buddha embedded with humongous diamonds) before heading back to the 'Monkey'.
The next day we caught the flight out of Cambodia to Hong Kong - our final destination before Fiji.
