We have now been in Busselton for 5 days, and I thought I would put off writing the first blog entry until I had given the place a fair chance! and to be honest my opinion is improving (especially after visiting the nearby Dunsborough today!) Busselton is basically a very long coastal resort - which makes getting around without a car particularly difficult. We are staying fairly close to the town centre however, so its not much of a problem getting to all the shops. An upshot is that the beach and coastline is very pretty here, with the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere in Busselton, it's quite impressive!
The beach is literally 2 minutes walk - right at the end of our road! When the weather picks up it will be really nice to nip down there!
A highlight for me has been discovering the 'More' Café on Kent Street (I think)! It does really amazing vegetarian dishes, which is nice to come across after all the carnivore-orientated items in the supermarkets! Even the bloody chips here have 'chicken salt' on, and when making cup-cakes today I noticed the sprinkles I bought also had gelatine in! Never mind!
Yesterday we took a trip down to the Jetty to see the construction work in progress. You can't get on the main one at the moment - probably not until next April as they're repairing it and extending the underwater observatory.
We also visited some art galleries in the town, ArtGeo was by far the best, with an exhibition by local artists on basically 'why developers are scum'!!! (not so great!) We ended up voting for our favourites as the Peoples Choice award was being chosen that day. Dave only voted for a painting because it looked like there was a Snake on a mobile phone.
Across the road (Queen Street), ArtGeo have another building inside the Courthouse. The lady there, as with the other gallery was friendly and happy to talk to us about the museum. To the back of the Courthouse were cells where criminals were kept, with even a room with places they chained up the aboriginal people - sad to see. The wooden inner furniture of the courthouse was still in place, with pieces of art displayed around it!
Dave has been ringing around for work today, which has taken some time - a few possible contacts made so that is good. I have been writing letters, and sending emails and my cv out to the local development consultancies, so hopefully something positive will come out of today's efforts!
